Va. Beltway traffic shift this weekend

The transportation project having the biggest impact on travelers this fall is the HOT lanes construction along the western side of the Beltway in Virginia. This is so despite the fact that through lanes are not blocked during peak travel periods. Here's the latest advisory from the Virginia Department of Transportation: Beginning Friday night, northbound and southbound traffic on the Capital Beltway will shift left approaching the Arlington Boulevard (Route 50) interchange. Beltway lanes in this area will narrow so workers can safely demolish and rebuild parts of the roadway and the bridges over Route 50. This traffic pattern will remain for 12 to 18 months. Work schedule On Friday night, all lanes on the inner loop (I-495 North) will be closed by 11 p.m. Drivers will be directed to the exit ramp lanes for Route 50. They will continue through the ramp lanes to get back onto I-495 North....

Hiker-biker bridge moving forward in Montgomery

Montgomery County drivers passing by the scene on Veirs Mill Road in Aspen Hill may think they're looking up at a new interchange for the Intercounty Connector. But no, it's the ramp for a still-incomplete bridge that will take the Rock Creek Hiker-Biker Trail over the roadway. Click here to see what the finished product should look like. But we're not there yet. If weather permits this weekend, the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission will close one lane in each direction on Veirs Mill Road at Aspen Hill Road from 8 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday. If bad weather delays this, it will be done the following weekend. While the lanes are closed, workers will use two cranes to lift and position four 37-ton, curved steel beams over Veirs Mill Road. The eventual result will be a 605 foot-long bridge for hikers and bikers on the 15-mile-long...

The Week Ahead

As part of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project, weather permitting, there will be a complete overnight closure of Telegraph Road and associated ramps in the area of the Capital Beltway Interstate 95/495 on Tuesday, October 13 between 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next morning for bridge construction. Motorists are encouraged to take alternate routes to avoid expected delays. Traffic will be halted in both directions on Telegraph Road between Duke Street and Huntington Avenue for concrete bridge deck pouring. All associated ramps to and from the Capital Beltway I-95/495 South to Telegraph Road will be closed. Motorists traveling from the Inner Loop (I-95/495 South) into the Eisenhower Valley will be able to use the Pershing Avenue exit. The detours for northbound and southbound Telegraph Road is as follows: Northbound: Huntington Avenue East to U.S. Route 1 North to Duke Street West. Southbound: Duke Street East to U.S. Route 1...

The Weekend and Beyond

The District will be awash with events and closings that may make getting around this weekend more fun than it has any right to be on a Saturday or Sunday. Sunday should be the more challenging of the two days. To begin with, Metro will close two stations and part of a third for the entire Columbus Day weekend. The Waterfront-SEU and Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter Metrorail stations will be completely closed, and there will be no Green Line service at the L'Enfant Plaza Metrorail station, from 10:30 pm on Friday through Monday. The Blue and Orange Lines at the L'Enfant Plaza Metrorail station will not be affected. Service will resume at all Metrorail stations on Tuesday. Metro will provide free direct shuttle bus service all weekend between the Anacostia, Navy Yard and Gallery Place-Chinatown stations. For more information please visit www.metroopensdoors.com. For north-south travel in the downtown area, residents and...

Headaches on the Horizon

Weeknight Metro Delays Metro has been warning for weeks about the work it's planning this Columbus Day weekend on the Green and Yellow lines. Starting Friday night, the Waterfront-SEU and Archives Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter stations and the Green Line at L'Enfant Plaza Station will be closed. Workers will be replacing rail switches at L'Enfant Plaza and inspecting the bridge on the Yellow Line over the Potomac River. Rerouted Yellow Line: The Yellow Line will be rerouted to follow the Blue Line route from Pentagon to Stadium-Armory. Trains will stop at the lower level of L'Enfant Plaza. On Friday night, from 10:30 p.m. until closing, the Yellow Line will run between Huntington and Pentagon. Weekend shuttle bus service: Free shuttle buses will run directly from Gallery Place-Chinatown to the Metro Center, Navy Yard and Anacostia stations. Another shuttle from Gallery Place to Navy Yard will make stops at Waterfront-SEU and L'Enfant...

The Weekend and Beyond

Tell me if I missed anything major that could affect local travel in the days ahead. My goal is to account for the events and construction projects most likely to affect how you get around the Washington area. Saturday AIDS Walk The annual AIDS Walk Washington begins with a rally at 8:15 a.m. at Freedom Plaza (Pennsylvania Avenue and 13th Street NW), followed by a 5K run at 9 a.m. and the walk at 9:15 a.m. Street closings along Pennsylvania Avenue and south on Third Street NW begin at 8:30 a.m. and will be lifted as the walkers pass. (See our map.) The closest Metro stations are Federal Triangle on the Blue and Orange lines and and Metro Center on the Blue, Orange and Red lines. Army Ten Miler on Sunday From 7:30 to about noon Sunday, traffic in Arlington and downtown D.C. will be disrupted by the 25th annual...
