Nightlife Agenda Pick of the Week

By Fritz Hahn

Rollie Fingers. Tom Selleck. Friedrich Nietzsche. Salvador Dali. Freddie Mercury. Teddy Roosevelt. What do these great men have in common? Mustaches. Bushy, waxy, attention-getting mustaches. We'd wager Magnum P.I. would do pretty well for himself at McFadden's Friday, where the Mustachio Bashio party is celebrating facial hair while raising money for charity. (Tom would certainly be a shoo-in for the "Sexy Stache" contest, but since he won't be in attendance, the field is wide open for the rest of us.) Organizers are making it worth everyone's while to sport a mustache, fake or not -- it's $5 if you've got something on your lip, $10 if you don't. Once inside, specials include $2 Budweiser bottles, $5 Bud Light pitchers and $5 pint-sized Captain Morgan drinks. Proceeds go to Locks of Love, a charity that provides hairpieces for children and teenagers who've lost their hair during chemotherapy and other medical treatments.

This is just one of the events we're highlighting in this week's Nightlife Agenda column, which also includes hip-hop legend Rakim, Grammy-nominated DJ and remixer Todd Terry and a new weekday happy hour at Vegetate.

Greetings GoGs,

After an extended hiatus of six months, I'll be back in town on 10/13/06. Any must see music (alternative rock, urban, heck I don't care that first weekend back that I should see with friends? New restaurants, clubs or pubs I should visit? I'm excited about getting back to the District and want that first weekend back to be a memorable one.

We Threw It, They Grew It!

The first annual Mustachio Bashio took place on Friday, September 29, 2006 and was an overwhelming success - raising over $1,000 for the Locks of Love charity. Abundant varieties of mustache were in attendance - from the real (flavor savors, soup strainers, and lip ticklers) to the surreal (ribbons, pencils, fake fur and even asparagus). Indeed, McFadden's was transported back to an era where life was simpler and the moustache was king! Congratulations go out to Mr. Sal Manilla, winner of the fiercely competitive "sexy 'stashe" contest (grand prize was a $100 airline certificate from Air Tran). Special thanks to McFadden's of DC for providing the venue and to Danielle DeSilvis for organizing and promoting the event. It was a great evening which raised a lot of money for a wonderful charity. Next year's Bashio is sure to be bigger and better, so start working on that nose neighbor now!
