Nightlife Agenda Picks of the Week

By Fritz Hahn

It's Howard Homecoming Weekend, and you know what that means -- Partying with Diddy! Maxing out your credit card on expensive champagne! Renting an Escalade so you look cool cruising down U Street!

But let's say that's not your scene, and you'd rather hear good music and get your dance and sip on without throwing down a lot of cash. All you need is Fritz and Rhome's No Cash, No Bling Guide to Homecoming.

Thursday: Grits and Gravy. Old-school hip-hop, disco and funky '70s R&B and a crowd that's actually smiling -- smiling! -- and having a good time on the dance floor. Arrive between 6 and 8 for happy hour

Friday: The Reunion. Some enterprising promoters are trying to "reclaim" homecoming by offering free admission (with an e-mail RSVP) and free food in an intimate atmosphere in lieu of other, larger parties that are offering big-name stars and $50 cover charges. We'll see who wins.

Saturday: Guerilla Lounge. Underground hip-hop from D.C. and Texas hosted by Asheru, the man behind the "Boondocks" theme. Heads talk about these parties after they're over. Don't sleep.

Sunday: Daylight. No need for a disco nap when the music starts at 4 p.m.! DJ Bill Source -- formerly of State of the Union -- provides the beats on his birthday, while guests can snack on free food and the bar dispenses happy hour drinks until 10.

Glad to see so many people are finding out what we Hill residents already know--H Street is a great destination. But contrary to what the GOG chat from today states, there isn't aleays nearby parking on and around H Street NE. If you plan to have some libations, may I recommend you take advantage of the shuttle service that the local H Street bars are offering to and from Union Station. Questions? Check out the bar's website or call for more information.

After reading so many great things about H Street on the GOG Blog/Chats, a group of us decided to head over there on Saturday night. It was TOTALLY shady! I don't know how you can recommend it as a safe neighborhood.

The cab driver who dropped us off even said "good luck finding a cab to come get you out here."

Women, don't go alone. I was so glad I was with a group. We were all incredibly surprised the Post would recommend such a sketchy part of town.

I've lived in Detroit and New York City, and I have absolutely no problem hanging out in 'transitional' neighborhoods. BUT-

H Street is far from 'transitional.'
