Lite-Brite at the Museum

By Julia Beizer

It's been a while since the Hirshhorn rocked the night hours with DJs, gallery tours and a cash bar, but thankfully the evening events are back. This Friday, the modern art museum stays up late for Hirshhorn After Hours, an event featuring the musical stylings of indie legend Ian Svenonius. He'll be manning the decks from 8 p.m. until midnight.

The event celebrates the newest installation in the museum's Directions series. Virgil Marti and Pae White will create an immersive experience in the Hirshhorn's lobby much like Jim Lambie did last May -- but with sculptures and chandeliers instead of vinyl tape.

For some throwback entertainment, the museum will set up a slew of Lite-Brite machines on the second floor in honor of "Reflect, Refract, Project," an exhibition of light works. Curator Anne Ellegood will give a tour of the exhibit at 11 p.m.

This event should be a lot like the Jim Lambie event last spring, save for one small detail: a $12 cover charge. The evening is still a good deal -- I mean, you'd pay the same for a show at the Black Cat -- but the idea of paying for museums always stings a bit in this town. Tickets are only $10 if you purchase in advance, so call the Hirshhorn at 202-633-4629 to reserve tickets and avoid surcharge fees.

Does anyone know what happened to Stella's Restaurant in Alexandria? One day it was open, and the next it had water all over the floor and they're closed. Will they reopen?

tickets for the Hirshhorn event are also available online here:

also, Jean - I doubt Stellas will reopen (at least at that location) because a few weeks ago they auctioned off all the fixtures and stuff... not a good sign.

A few notes on the AfterHours:
DJ Ian will be spinning until 11:30 (not midnight), and last call wil be at 11:15.

All bags will be checked, so either get there early or be prepared for a line. There is a coat check, but lockers are very limited.

Drinks and food will not be allowed in most galleries, so leave time for both inbibing and viewing.
