Rolled-down windows, outdoor happy hours and picnic plans: this week's warm weather has everyone thinking spring. It also had one Got Plans? reader thinking about her toes.
Georgetown, Washington, D.C.: Now that sandal and strappy heel weather is upon us, I definitely need a pedi. Happily, my boyfriend has expressed an interest in a "foot treatment" as well. I'd love to find somewhere, preferably in Northwest or Capitol Hill, that both he and I could enjoy together and that isn't too girly. Any ideas?
I talked this over with one of my favorite spa experts, Kristen Page-Kirby from Express. We both think a hotel spa is a good bet for a not-too-girly experience. Kristen suggested George at the Four Seasons; the salon offers tandem pedicures for $45 per person. The spa at the Mandarin Oriental can arrange tandem pedicures as well. The cost is $65 per person. This chatter wanted a spot in Northwest Washington, but I had a great experience at the Ritz in Tysons. The Tysons spa offers tandem pedis that start at $60 per person.
But we're talking high-end hotels here. If this chatter's guy is just barely interested in the whole pedi thing, he might be put off by some of the pampering at the hotel spas. Kristen had a fabulous treatment at the Mandarin Oriental, but she felt a little awkward when a staff member carried her chunky boots away on a platter.
Someone who's new to the whole pedicure thing might feel more comfortable at a salon on the lower end of the cost spectrum. I'm particularly fond of Modern Nails salon in Pentagon City. Pedicures are $30 and I've seen men lounging in those foot-bath chairs every time I've been there. But this isn't the type of place you can arrange a romantic pedicure date. Modern Nails is like the Cosi of spas. When your name is called, you get a seat at any available pedicure chair; there's no guarantee that you and your guy will get to sit together.
I also called Aveda Institute, the training salon in the Verizon Center. They can schedule tandem pedicures as well. Treatments begin at $27 per person.
