Until We Eat Again

In my years as a Guru, I've gotten a number of questions through Got Plans? and in conversation. You know the types. Are the Gurus for real? Do you really eat out all the time? I thought, before I sign off for the last time, that today would be a nice opportunity to finally give a taste of my life as a Guru.

What's Your Favorite Restaurant? Let's just cut to the chase. I love good Mexican, sushi and Indian food. I'm just as happy eating off disposable plates as I am dressed to the nines. For the high-end, you'll often find me at Rasika for its fresh take on Indian food, CityZen for its incredible allegiance to seasons or Central for the symphonies of its burgers. Lobster! Tuna! I am also like the kids at Willy Wonka's factory when ordering from my favorite Chinese takeout, Great Wall Szechuan House, lunching on soup and a sandwich at C.F. Folks or digging into the jubilation of spring rolls at Eden Center or the spicy shrimp stew at Inti.

You Said Mexican. Does That Exist Here? YES! It took me ages, but I've compiled a go-to map for my favorite Mexican spots. Burrito cravings lead me to El Charrito Caminante. I savor the crispy tacos at Taqueria Poblano and the soft tacos at Taqueria Distrito Federal and Tacos Pepitos Bakery II. When it comes to moles and sopas, it's La Sirenita all the way.

What Types of Sweets Do You Like? I must admit that I'm a frozen yogurt fan. I've been eating the tart stuff since Pinkberry's was just a jewel in an entrepreneur's eye. Many a trip to New York and L.A. revolved around pilgrimages to Bloomie's. Thankfully, we've got tart frozen yogurt at Lord & Taylor, Sweetgreen and out in the 'burbs around Dulles with Iceberry.

But here I've made myself look like I eat healthy. I am an ice cream fiend, a cupcake maniac and a lover of brownies. The farmhouse brownie at Buzz, the lemon tart at Michel Richard Citronelle, the banana cream pie at Majestic and the beignets at DC Coast are a few top indulgences, but you won't have to look far back into the blog and chat archives to see me wax eloquent about other donuts, cakes and pies that have stolen my heart.

How Do You Not Gain a Million Pounds? Well, it hasn't been pretty. Thankfully, we Gurus often sleep through the breakfast hour and are reimbursed for a bit of health club expenses.

What's Fritz Really Like? No description will do justice to Fritz, so here's an anecdote from my first day of work at washingtonpost.com. About an hour after making the rounds to meet my new coworkers, Fritz ambled in with a pair of kicks that matched his upscale T-shirt. "Wow, he must cover fashion," I thought.
