Dress to Impress

By Fritz Hahn

Every year, we implore readers to come up with a costume more original and adventurous than "Sexy Nurse" or "Sexy Governor" or, for the guys, pimps, pirates and random superheroes. To help stimulate your thinking, we offer this package of high-reward costume contests. Dress creatively and you could find yourself $5,000 richer or sunning yourself on the beach in the Caribbean (or both). Good luck.

The Top Three Five:

Hot 99.5 Freek-O-Ween
Prize: $5,000 Cash
Where: Fur
When: Saturday, Nov. 1
How it works: Even though it's the day after Halloween, Hot 99.5's annual party offers the largest costume contest prize in the area. To enter, just show up at Fur in costume at 10 p.m. There's no need to register -- just hang out or dance to the Top 40 and hip-hop that Hot 99.5 DJ Chris Styles will be spinning in the main room. Sometime before 1 a.m., Hot 99.5 staffers roaming the crowd will choose their three favorite outfits and bring the contestants on stage. Then the audience votes to see which one gets the cash and which two get ... Joel McHale tickets. (Yeah, we know. Not much of a prize there. Ed Note: Hey, Joel McHale's hilarious!)

(More after the jump)

Elliot in the Morning's Halloween Bash
Prize: $3,000 cash
Where: R.F.D. Washington
When: Friday, Oct. 31.
How it Works: DC101's morning host offers a $3,000 cash prize for the best costume at this party, which includes live music from local rockers Junkfood and Flounder's Mash Ups. The Plain White T's will be making an appearance after their Patriot Center show, so break out your "Delilah" costume.

The Pietasters
Prize: Tickets to every concert at the 9:30 club in November and December -- including the sold-out shows like Vampire Weekend and Bad Brains.
Where: 9:30 club
When: Friday, Oct. 31.
How it Works: There will be a table to sign up for the contest on the first floor. A panel of judges will whittle the contestants down to 10. Those lucky ghouls will take the stage near the end of the concert, the audience's reaction will narrow it down to the final three and after another round of audience judging, the prizes will be awarded. Third place takes home a pair of tickets for their choice of show in November. The runner up gets a pair of tickets to their pick of December shows. And the winner gets a spot on the permanent guest list for the rest of the year.

Halloween Graveyard Jam
Prize: Top prize is a choice of: A weekend in Aruba, including airfare and hotel; a weekend at the adults-only summer camp Club Getaway; dinner for two aboard the Odyssey; tickets to the Things to Do D.C. New Year's Eve party.
Where: The Hard Rock Cafe
When: Friday, Oct. 31
How it Works: There are prizes for the most original, the scariest and the prettiest costumes. Judges will be walking through the crowd, says Things to Do D.C. founder Greg Bland, looking for people who look like they're having a good time as well as wearing a cool costume. Around midnight, the judges will bring their favorite partygoers up on stage, where audience applause will determine the winner in each category. Then those three will vie against each other for Best Overall prize. That person will have the first choice of prize, the runner up will go second, etc. You'd think that the trip to Aruba would be a no-brainer, but not necessarily, Bland says. "One year, we were giving away a trip to Iceland and the person who won chose to take dinner on the Odyssey instead."

Disturbia
Prize: $1,000 bottle service credit
Where: Love
When: Friday, Oct. 31.
How it Works: All four floors of the club will be open on Friday for "a gruesome yet sexy Halloween party," and anyone wearing a costume gets free admission all night long. Make your way to the top level, where judges will be selecting the best overall outfit. The winner receives a table and a $1,000 bottle service tab, so you can "Pop Champagne" like Ron Brown, Jim Jones and Julez Santana.

Runners-Up:

Ghostown
Prize: $1,000 Cash
Where: Town
When: Friday, Oct. 31

Nightmare on M Street
Prize: $500
Where: McFadden's
Note: While the Nightmare on M Street involves 15 bars, the costume contest will be held at McFadden's at midnight.

Kstreet Halloween Party
Prize: $500 gift certificate
Where: kstreet
When: Friday, Oct. 31

14th Annual Georgetown Events Halloween Party
Prize: $500 Smith Point Bar tab for best group outfit
Where: Old Post Office Pavilion
When: Friday, Oct. 31

Planete Chic
Prize: Full day spa treatment at Salon Spa ROI ($475 Value)
Where: Tabaq

There is also DC101's elliot in the morning halloween party. I think the costume contest is a 3 grand prize.
