Spike's Summer Tunes

By David Malitz

This is unofficially the next-to-last weekend of summer but the weather doesn't seem like it will cooperate with those looking to enjoy some outdoor fun. That doesn't bode well for Spike'd Sundays, the weekly party hosted by Good Stuff Eatery's Spike Mendelsohn. But for those wishing to keep the summer feeling going, Mendelsohn offered up a play list of some of his favorite seasonal songs. Maybe you'll hear one at the pool.

"When You Were Young" - The Killers: Loving this song from them. Their last album hasn't left my car since I got it.

"Mad World" - Adam Lambert: I'm a fan and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

"Panic Switch" - Silversun Pickups: I threw a party with them at the Capitol Skyline Hotel pool this summer. They played, I BBQ'd, it was one of the best afternoons of the summer.

"I'm in Miami" - LMFAO : Even though it's a little "clubby" compared to what I usually listen to, I heard it on the radio while crusing D.C. and can't get it out of my head now. Radio still works for me!

"Beat It" - Michael Jackson: I'm still heartbroken over MJ! Love love love all his songs. And if you don't know, I'm known to bust a move here and there.

(More after the jump.)

"Blackbird" - The Beatles: If you look at my iPod, I'm much more of a hippie than a hipster.

"Home" - Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros: I was turned onto them through friends and if you have two minutes to listen to new music I suggest these guys.

"Perfect" - Army of Me
: The lead singer, Vince, is a good friend who I had the pleasure of meeting earlier this summer since he's in D.C. He has an amazing inner spirit and his music is pretty damn moving.

"Sunglasses (Keep Ya Shades On)" - Bruck Up: I just heard this song by this new reggae artist and I'm all over it!!

"Three Little Birds" - Bob Marley: This one makes me happy every time, no matter what, no matter where. I also got to see Ziggy perform this spring at the White House...amazing!

"Crazy" - Gnarls Barkley: I was hiking in Runyon Canyon (L.A.) and this song came on the iPod, it totally got into my bones. I was, like, bolting up that mountain and when I'm getting my exercise on this is a go to track.

"Fight for Your Right" - Beastie Boys: I can't tell you how many times the Beastie Boys have gotten me and my guys through a non-stop, ass-kicking day at Good Stuff Eatery. It's the best kitchen therapy ever.

"I'm Yours" - Jason Mraz: I really like this guy. I like his style. I like his hats. I like his voice. I want to make him burgers. Jason, come visit!

"Paper Planes" - M.I.A: You can always catch me singing along to this song at parties and getting all the words wrong, but that's cool. It's almost played too much, but still reallllly hot.

"Clumsy" - Fergie: I only say this (I swear) because I absolutely loved watching Michelle Obama and her girls dance to this song at the White House Easter Egg Roll while I cooked for the kids. Such a moment.

this playlist is hilarious, i really admire people who don't have qualms about sharing their bland taste with others ... and when i think of summer pool songs i think of "blackbird" and "mad world"!
