The Gibson's expanding to two floors Saturday

By Fritz Hahn

Last weekend, I took a friend to the Gibson for cocktails. As usual, there was a line, so we left our names and cell phone numbers with the doorman and went somewhere else to wait for the "we have two barstools available for you" text message, which took about 20-25 minutes.

That scenario will hopefully happen less often after this Saturday's Halloween party, when the Gibson unveils its new second-floor addition. The three new rooms almost double the popular cocktail lounge's indoor seating capacity of 48 -- especially important when the weather gets colder and the large back patio won't be a destination for the overflow crowds, as it was this summer.

Open Tuesday through Saturday, the upstairs features a marble bar with about as many barstools as downstairs and a row of two-top tables lining a window-filled wall. There are two smaller rooms that double as lounges, with tables and couches for around a dozen people in each. Lit by sconces and overhead lights, the overall vibe is that of a retro hideaway; it's like downstairs but not as dim, thanks to walls painted in lighter colors.

Party-planners, take note:The two smaller rooms can be rented out for private events -- something the Gibson hasn't really been able to do in the past. (If this private option becomes too popular, though, it might prevent the new addition from making a real dent in the weekend lines outside.)

Get a first look at the new space Saturday at the Gibson's Corpse Revival Halloween party, which features an open bar from 8:30 to 2:30, snacks from the new menu and dance music, plus a pumpkin-carving contest (bring your own from home) and a zombie costume contest with prizes. The back patio will be tented and heated, which should make room for more mayhem. Tickets are on sale at the bar for $75 (including tax and tip).

If you can't get in The Gibson, try Wisdom on Cap. Hill. Great cocktails, great atmosphere, great staff.
