Free taxi rides home

By Fritz Hahn

Tonight marks the beginning of the holiday season's SoberRide, the annual service that offers free taxi rides home to anyone who's been out at a bar or holiday party and shouldn't get behind the wheel.

Every night through January 1, call 800-200-TAXI (800-200-8294) between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. and you can get a ride worth up to $50 anywhere in the Washington metropolitan area, no questions asked. There are some things to remember:

If it's under $50, you pay nothing. If it's over $50, you pay the difference.

You can't call at 10 and ask to be picked up at midnight -- you have to call when you need the cab. However, given the volume of calls, it's a good idea to give the taxi at least half an hour -- and usually more -- to get to your location.

Only some cab companies participate in the SoberRide. Ask the dispatcher which company's cab you should be looking out for.

Remember, the system isn't perfect. On some occasions when I've called SoberRide, the cabs didn't show up, or they took so long that I wound up flagging down another cab and paying for a ride home. But I've also had everything run smoothly. Even if you have to wait for a cab, though, it's definitely worth it.
