The bright side of winter weather: Special deals

By Stephanie Merry

In an effort to lure people out of their snowy lairs, theaters, bars and restaurants are enticing patrons with special deals over the next few days. You can check out #opendc on Twitter for chatter about what's open tonight, but we're especially excited about these ways to save.

Theater deals
The League of Washington Theatres has compiled a list of discounts; here's a rundown, plus a few more thrown in for good measure:

First up, Studio Theatre is continuing its discounted performances of "In the Red and Brown Water." Tickets to tonight's performance are $30 for those who use the promo code SNOW and $19 for students using the code RUSH.

There are only a few days left to catch Taffety Punk's edgy "," and tonight's performance is just $5 -- if you mention you're a fan of Pink Line Project at the door.

Tonight's staging of "The Four of Us" is pay-what-you-can with the ridiculously cute special code "Snow Snow Go Away."

Catch Folger's "Orestes, A Tragic Romp" for just $20 tonight and Friday. The sale begins an hour before showtime, and theater-goers should mention the League of Washington Theatres for the deal.

Shakespeare Theatre Company is once again offering winter weather specials, this time for $25. The deal, valid online only, is for tonight's performance of "Richard II" and the 2 p.m. show of "Henry V" on Sunday. The discount code is 7218.

Gala Hispanic Theatre is also jumping on the discount bandwagon. Tickets for Friday, Saturday and Sunday's performances of "The Beauty of the Father" are buy one, get one free, and the theater is throwing in a free glass of wine to sweeten the deal.

Another weekend-long special applies to "The Constellation," now showing at Joe's Movement Emporium. Get $5 off tickets online to performances tonight through Sunday with the discount code MRES.

Restaurant and bar deals
The D.C. Passion Food Group restaurants are expanding happy hour drink specials all night. At Acadiana, Ceiba, DC Coast and TenPenh, you can score $5 specialty cocktails and selected wines by the glass and $4 draft beers from 3 p.m. until 11 p.m. both today and tomorrow.

To help you get over your cabin fever this weekend, Sou'Wester sommelier Carlton McCoy is hosting a Stir Crazy mixology class. Learn how to make three cocktails: the Sou'Wester Mint Julep, the French 69 and the Naughty Toddy. The $25 fee includes the drinks and some bar eats. The class takes place between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Call 202-787-6068 to reserve a space.
