Get the blues -- for free -- at the Old Bowie Town Grille's weekly jam session. (Mark Gail -- The Washington Post)
This week, pay nothing to laugh with seven female stand-up comics, watch clips from the early days of the film industry or escape to a Caribbean happy hour with free food and music.
Monday
Girls Night Out at Eleventh Street Lounge
Seven female stand-up comics deliver a night of comedy in the basement of this Clarendon lounge. Headliners include Julie Fox, the winner of Rams Head Tavern's open mike competition.
Tuesday
'Warhol: Photographs Selected From the GW Permanent Collection' at the Luther W. Brady Art Gallery
The Andy Warhol Foundation donated 152 of the artist's photographs to George Washington University, and 16 of those images - including one of the late Sen. Ted Kennedy - are now on display, alongside works by Warhol's contemporaries.
Wednesday
Blues Jam at Old Bowie Town Grille
The weekly jam session attracts members of local blues bands and enthusiastic amateurs who come out to play classic tunes and demo original songs. Grab a table and listen, or bring an instrument, sign up and take the stage.
Thursday
'Film Ist . . . a Girl and a Gun' at the Hirshhorn
All you need to make a movie, French director Jean-Luc Godard once said, "is a girl and a gun." Directors Gustav Deutsch and Hanna Schimek spent four years looking through movies from the 1890s to the 1940s to make this experimental montage film, which jump-cuts between clips of men, women, love, sex and violence.
Friday
Escape Fridays at the Crossroads
Cold weather getting you down? Take a tip from local Caribbean expats and visit the Crossroads. Friday's Escape night features a free Caribbean buffet, two-for-one drink specials and dance music until 8 p.m. After happy hour, stick around for live reggae music from Peter Humphrey and the Oasis Band and soca and reggae music spun by DJs Sprang International and Bobby's Music Machine.
Saturday
Kids in the Kitchen at YMCA National Capital
If you're trying to get your kids interested in exercise and eating well, take them to this event, where they can cook with "Hell's Kitchen" winning chef Rahman "Rock" Harper and "Top Chef" finalist Carla Hall, work up a sweat with Redskins defensive end Andre Carter, play games and make crafts.
Sunday
Oscar Viewing Party at Nellie's Sports Bar
Why watch the Oscars on your couch when you could be sitting in a room of people cheering and jeering every result? Drink specials include a beat-the-clock happy hour ($1 bottled beers, rail drinks and Miller Lite from 5 to 6; prices rise $1 every hour until 8) and $12 buckets of beer all night.
