Good concerts springing up all over

By David Malitz

Free Energy is just a small part of spring's packed music calendar. (Cass Bird)

Live music aficionados know that concert schedules are a seasonal thing. Winter months of December-February are the slow time of the year, when touring bands stay off the road and lots of locals fill the dates in clubs. Summer is when the industry's biggest names set out on big moneymaking tours, hoping to filling pavilions with their high-ticket shows.

Spring may very well be the most interesting time of year, though. That's when many on-the-verge bands hit the road, often as they work their way to or from Texas for the annual South by Southwest festival that attracts more than 1,000 groups.

This spring is no different. The calendars of local clubs are jam-packed with young bands worth checking out. Today's Weekend section takes a look at four acts in town this month that you should definitely keep an eye on, because I expect big things from them: Dam-Funk, Free Energy, Dum Dum Girls and the Soft Pack. But that's just a small sampling of who will be hitting town in the next couple months. Janelle Monae, Yacht, Real Estate, Mi Ami, Wiz Khalifa are some others I like. See you in the clubs.
