Free & easy events
This week's free events include the chance to tap dance with Maurice Hines and the first installment of the Jazz in the Garden concert series.
Free s'mores of a sort
To help the city get into the swing of summer, the Ritz-Carlton is offering complimentary mini cones of s'more gelato and s'more-tinis (served in tasting glasses) every night in the lobby. They may not be made around a campfire, but they actually sound about right for s'mores in Georgetown.
Lunchtime Tap Jam
Arena Stage is providing the perfect excuse to break away from work in the middle of the day: "Sophisticated Ladies" star Maurice Hines, along with cast members John and Leo Manzari, will be offering a quick tap lesson followed by a group dance party.
Program to Commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Korean War
The United States Navy Memorial is getting a jump on Memorial Day activities with this special program that includes a lecture by author David Sears, who will discuss and sign his new book, "Such Men as These." After that, catch a screening of "The Bridges at Toko-Ri," a 1954 war flick starring William Holden, Grace Kelly and Mickey Rooney.
Sweet Fool cookie tasting
One of ACKC's chocolatiers, Erika Bahnik, is launching a line of cookies for the confectioner, and you can be one of the first to try them at an open house tasting. Chocolate chunk, double chocolate chipotle, hazelnut/chocolate cookie sandwich and peanut butter & chocolate -- we don't know which one sounds more tempting.
Jazz in the Garden
In its 10th year, the Sculpture Garden's free concert series kicks off with a performance by singer Leslie Summey. Pack a blanket and a picnic, or grab drinks and snacks at the Pavilion Cafe.
Rockville Hometown Holidays
This annual Memorial Day weekend celebration features arts and crafts vendors, an environmentally friendly green festival, plenty of children's activities and multiple stages of music. Saturday features a gumbo of New Orleans acts, including Cajun bluesman Tab Benoit and Papa Grows Funk. On Sunday, '90s alt-rock hitmaker Soul Asylum performs.
National Memorial Day Concert
America's soldiers will be honored at this concert that airs live from the West Lawn of the Capitol on PBS. Actors Gary Sinise and Joe Mantegna are co-hosts, and the lineup of performers includes country superstar Brad Paisley, Grammy-winning gospel singer Yolanda Adams, Lionel Richie and many others.
