Free and easy events
This week's free events include a bike race down Pennsylvania Avenue, screenings of movies new and old and a rooftop happy hour with us.
Kiss My Arts
Everyone's a critic. At least that's the idea at arty Vienna cafe the Soundry the first Monday of every month. A lineup of artists present their pieces and then invite the audience to chime in with feedback. And for those averse to the idea of Interstate 66 on a Monday night, the event is also broadcast live on Ustream.com.
'Treasure of the Sierra Madre'
Humphrey Bogart stars in this John Huston classic about three Americans searching for gold in Mexico and the troubles they encounter. Pizza, popcorn and soft drinks will be provided for free as part of the Pursuit of Happiness summer movie series.
Rockville's outdoor film series, Movies in the Square, continues with this ensemble cast rom-com starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Garner and Jessica Alba.
Going Out Guide Happy Hour
Come join the Going Out Gurus at one of the city's al fresco spots: the deck at Nellie's Sports Bar. The U Street hangout's expansive outdoor space is the perfect place to spend a midsummer evening mingling and people-watching. By now, you should know the drill when it comes to our monthly shindigs: drink specials from 6 to 8 p.m. and free food while it lasts.
'The Unbroken Line: A Cast of Characters'
Pay a visit to the opening reception of the new show at Washington Printmakers Gallery, and you may be surprised to find that prints are more than flat objects. The solo exhibition spotlights artist Terry Svat, who creates three-dimensional collages of printed materials on canvas.
They'll be festin' in Reston with a weekend of food, games, arts, crafts and multiple stages of entertainment, including Saturday headliners King Teddy, who fuse swing, rockabilly and jump blues.
Pro cycling comes to Pennsylvania Avenue with a day of races that includes kids races at 11:40 a.m. and noon and a men's pro invitational at 1:15 p.m. The start and finish line is between 12th and 13th streets NW.
