Free and easy events

By Stephanie Merry

This week's free events include a new DJ night, yet another outdoor film series and a sneak peek at Shark Week.

Moombahton Mondays
The Velvet Lounge's newest weekly event extends the weekend as local DJ Dave Nada spins his custom brand of slowed-down Dutch house music that has become an international hit.

Stars on the Avenue
Five consecutive nights of free movies in Bethesda's Woodmont Triangle kick off with the 1989 romantic comedy "When Harry Met Sally," starring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal.

'Free Land'
Filmmaker Minda Martin's 2009 film draws a parallel between her experiences with her parent's chronic homelessness and the homelessness of her Cherokee ancestors caused by their forced removal from their ancestral land 170 years ago. The film is presented as part of the National American Indian Museum's Daily Film in July program.

Redskins training camp
Will this be the season to hail Redskins victory? Get a sneak peek at what the future holds when the newest braves on the warpath -- coach Mike Shanahan and quarterback Donovan McNabb -- along with the rest of the team get together for a practice that's open to the public.

Shark Week screening
Discovery Channel's annual aquatic extravaganza, Shark Week, begins Sunday, but you can get a preview with an open screening of "Ultimate Air Jaws" in Veterans Plaza.

Seventh annual Asian festival
Each year, one Asian country is selected as the "Show-casing" country of the Reston Asian festival, and this year it's the Philippines. A Philippine Village showcase, food from various regions, traditional folk art performances and handmade crafts show off the country's rich culture.

Frederick Douglass Family Fun Festival
Celebrate the life of the abolitionist and author with a family-friendly day of music, crafts, games and educational activities.
