Spike Mendelsohn's We, the Pizza is officially open

Pizzas get the New York treatment at We, the Pizza (Photos by Justin Rude).
Head on down to Capitol Hill today and you may see a crowd gathered at Third and Pennsylvania, where Spike Mendelsohn has opened his latest restaurant, We the Pizza, next door to his Good Stuff Eatery.
I had a chance to check out the new restaurant last week, and here is what you can expect: a good selection of traditional and original pizza options, including seven vegetarian options, among which the mushroom pie is a true standout.
There is an old fashioned soda fountain where the crew whips up Manhattan egg creams and hand-made ginger ales. The soda fountain has its own line and cash register, so if you are waiting in the restaurant to pick up a carry-out order you can grab a drink without waiting through the main line.

I stopped by for two slices of pepperoni yesterday and almost got in line for two more to take home.
It's like Manhattan pizzerias, except that the place is clean and they use fresh ingredients.

If Spike can do for pizza what he did for burgers I hope he opens a New York style deli next, and then a gastro pub --- all right on that same block of Pennsylvania Avenue. I'd never have to leave home again.
