Getting Up Guide: Arcade Fire, Spoon and 'Heavy Metal'
What are your plans tonight? The Getting Up Guide is here to help you answer that question. Here's what's happening on Friday:
Arcade Fire and Spoon
With these two bands sharing the bill, it would be hard to generate more indie-rock blog buzz for one night. Montreal's Arcade Fire embarks on its first North American tour since 2007 supporting its new release, "The Suburbs." Meanwhile, one of Austin's most polished rock craftsmen, Spoon, can't stop releasing near-flawless albums, including the group's latest, "Transference." There are still lawn seats available for this show at Merriweather.
"Heavy Metal Picnic"
Did you attend the 1985 Full Moon Festival? Would you remember it if you had? Twenty-five years after Maryland's version of Woodstock took over a farm in a then-rural part of Montgomery County, filmmakers Jeff Krulik and John Heyn ("Heavy Metal Parking Lot") will give you (or your parents) the chance to relive the bacchanal that featured a slew of doom-metal bands when the film premieres Friday at the AFI Silver Theatre.
Gaia at the Fridge
Gaia, a movable feast of artistry, is landing at art and performance venue the Fridge this month with seven evenings of entertainment. Each night has a theme with an assorted lineup of performers, starting with Friday's mix of hip-hop, soul and house featuring singer Tamara Wellons, DJ Kimozaki, an animated video installation, and Kim Reyes, who will do body painting on demand. Not big on hip-hop? Upcoming weeks boast such themes as "chill out" and "rock electro" and promise something for just about everyone, including magic shows, poetry, contemporary dance and an electronica performance by Yoko K and Aphrodizia. (Full disclosure: Going Out Guru Rhome Anderson will be DJing on Aug. 22.) The Fridge will be stocked with beer, wine and champagne, meaning this is one-stop shopping for an evening of drinks and diversions.
