Something for the weekend: Cheap PBR and free DJs
During yesterday's Got Plans? chat, we talked about some of the best places in town to get a dirt-cheap happy hour beer. I mentioned Friday's Beat the Clock happy hour at My Brother's Place, where domestic drafts are 75 cents from 4 to 5 p.m., and then go up a quarter every hour until 9, and Asylum's long-running Saturday night Natty Light Countdown, which follows a similar price structure: Pints of Natty Light cost 50 cents from 5 to 6 p.m., and the price rises 50 cents every hour after that.
Another one worth your time happens Fridays at Jimmy Valentine's Lonely Hearts Club. The hook is cheap Pabst Blue Ribbon -- $1 16-ounce tallboys between 8 and 9 p.m., with the price rising $1 every hour until midnight. But why you'll want to go is the free DJ party, which features such folks as Darko (who has worked with electro party-starters Spank Rock and Amanda Blank), Neville C. (of weekends at Marvin and the Brazilian Rhythms party) and Ed the Metaphysical (a regular at Rock & Roll Hotel's upstars lounge and Asylum).
Full disclosure: My Nightlife Agenda co-author Rhome Anderson (DJ Stylus of the Poem-Cees and the Afrobeat Sol Power parties) is spinning at an upcoming event.
The windowless, speakeasy-meets-bordello vibe of Jimmy Valentine's lends itself to late-night partying, and it's rare to find a night when the crowd -- tattooed bartenders, fashion-plate hipsters, elaborately styled goths -- isn't down for dancing. I'd imagine the $1 PBRs will only make everyone more sociable.
Tonight's party is called BROADS, and the all-female DJ lineup features a few contributors to the popular Brightest Young Things Web site.
The full DJ schedule:
9/17: DJ Stylus
9/24: Wasteland, with DJ Strange and DJ Medusa
10/8 Neville C. and DJ Smudge
