National Christmas Tree to light up the Ellipse on Dec. 9

The National Park Service formally announced the date for the lighting of the national Christmas tree on the Ellipse: Thursday, Dec. 9. How does one obtain tickets to this yuletide bonanza? As in years past, it's an online lottery system.

New on the scene: Pizzeria Paradiso and Tonic Up Top

Last night, I went to check out two new bars: Pizzeria Paradiso's Old Town location, which officially opens Wednesday and is the local institution's first venture into Virginia, and Tonic on Top, a reinvention of the Mount Pleasant watering hole's upstairs restaurant. (Wait, you didn't know they had one?)

A Date for Michel: October 26

If he can work out a few kinks in his new restaurant in the Ritz-Carlton in Tysons Corner, Michel Richard says he might open Michel as early as Friday for hotel guests and start accepting reservations from the general public beginnning October 26. The celebrated French chef announced the news earlier today from the sweeping exhibition kitchen he inherited from Fabio Trabocchi and the late Maestro.

Red Palace opening delayed until at least early November
