Getting Up Guide: Nick Hornby and Ben Folds team up
What are your plans tonight? The Getting Up Guide is here to help you answer that question. Here's what's happening Tuesday:
Nick Hornby & Ben Folds
The PEN/Faulkner Foundation is sponsoring an evening with award-winning writer Nick Hornby and singer/musician Ben Folds to celebrate the new album, "Lonely Avenue," a collaboration of "musical short stories" with lyrics by Hornby and music/vocals from Folds. Hornby will read from his latest novel, "Juliet, Naked," while Folds will perform selections from "Lonely Avenue" at 7:30 p.m. Limited tickets remain for this event at the Sixth and I Synagogue.
D.C. Latin American Film Showcase
Portuguese and Spanish cinema are the focus of this two-week, free program of films at venues around the city. Films from Mexico, Paraguay, Cuba and Bolivia are also included. Tuesday's screenings at the GALA Hispanic Theatre at Tivoli Square are a pair of Spanish films: "7 Mesas," about a family that takes over a deceased relative's troubled pool hall; and "Mataharis," which explores the overlap between the private and professional lives of three detectives. The films are at 6 and 8 p.m. Free tickets are distributed outside the theater 30 minutes before showtime.
Worn Magazine Issue 2 launch party
D.C.-centric fashion and lifestyle pub Worn celebrates its second issue with a bash featuring an impressive lineup of local DJs. Keenan, Smudge, Sam Burns, Chris Burns, Cassidy, Lil' E and many others all take turns on the turntables at U Street Music Hall.
