Getting Up Guide: Os Mutantes; Synetic's 'Margarita'
What are your Veterans Day plans? The Getting Up Guide is here to help you answer that question. Here's what's happening Thursday:
Veterans Day at the Navy Memorial
Honor those who have sacrificed for American -- now and in the past -- at the U.S. Navy Memorial. Veterans from all eras will present rare military antiques, flags and insignia from their combat units beginning at 11 a.m. before a wreath-laying at the stoic Lone Sailor Statue at 1 p.m.
The Master and Margarita
The devil visits Stalin's Moscow in playwright Mikhail Bulgakov's posthumously produced parable, and in Synetic Theater's hands, the play's elements of good and evil literally dance with each other under the direction and choreography of Paata and Irina Tsikurishvili, who make rare onstage appearances. If it sounds familiar, that's because Synetic has worked with "Master" before, in 2004, when Post theater critic Peter Marks praised the show's "ferocious theatricality."
Ariel Pink's Haunted Grafitti and Os Mutantes
A pleasing combination of '70s AM soft-rock and self-absorbed garage rock. With Os Mutantes, legends of the Tropicalia movement of the late '60s were among the most notable to fuse Brazilian pop and psychedelic sounds. Doors for the late show are at 10 p.m.
