New movies: 'Hall Pass,' 'Even the Rain,' 'Nenette'

By Jessica Righthand

"Hall Pass" exhibits a brand of humor now eclipsed by the likes of Judd Apatow. (Peter Iovino)

In this week's movie releases, an orangutan grows old in the Paris zoo, two wives give their husbands a week-long "hall pass" and a film crew goes to Bolivia to film the story of Christopher Columbus's American conquest. Here's what Post critics had to say:

"Even the Rain" (Unrated) "The dubious role of film as history, heroic act and hegemonic force is plumbed with lucid sensitivity in 'Even the Rain,' Iciar Bollain's densely woven meditation on art and politics." -- Ann Hornaday

"Hall Pass" (R) "Haphazardly conceived, phlegmatically paced, lazily filmed and punctuated with gratuitous moments of sexual and scatological slapstick, 'Hall Pass' finds Peter and Bobby Farrelly grasping for shock value at a time when shock possesses virtually no value at all." -- Ann Hornaday

"Nenette" (Unrated) "Long stretches of the movie are silent. The orangutans try to entertain themselves by throwing blankets on their heads, or they sit next to the window and rhythmically bang on the glass. If it's occasionally tedious to watch, it also reinforces how boring it must be for the animals, especially in light of their intelligence." -- Stephanie Merry

"The Grace Card" (PG-13) "Powerful lead performances and the filmmaker's noble attempt at holding a magnifying glass over the Deep South's still-contentious race relations help 'The Grace Card' edge closer to the realm of mainstream entertainment. It's not just a dry sermon in feature-length form." -- Sean O'Connell

"Kaboom" (Unrated) "Rendered in bright primary colors and stuffed with music from a dozen contemporary alt-rock and electro-pop bands, 'Kaboom' is far from dour. In fact, much of the movie is good (if highly specialized) fun." -- Mark Jenkins
