Valentine's Day: Let's get physical

By Stephanie Merry

There must be big demand for Valentine's Day yoga; how else can you explain the fact that Flow Yoga Center's themed workshops "Thai Massage for Lovers" and "Partner Yoga for Lovers" both sold out more than two weeks in advance? The good news: There are plenty of other options all over town, but you might want to move fast if you're looking for a reservation. Here's a sampling:

Valentine's Day Partner Yoga
Do you trust your sweetie? Find out at the Georgetown branch of Down Dog Yoga, where a two-hour workshop includes AcroYoga -- as in, spotting your partner in a handstand. This is an all-levels class that's meant to be fun and loose, so most of the moves won't be too intense. (1046 Potomac Street NW. Noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12. $35 per person.)

Couples Massage and Yoga From the Heart For the Heart
Chevy Chase's Circle Yoga has a couple of options, including one for the non-yogis. A four-hour workshop includes lessons in Swedish massage, deep-tissue techniques and trigger points. Massage tables, relaxing music and body lotion will all be included. Meanwhile, Circle take a more literal look at hearts on Feb. 13 with a benefit class that focuses on heart-opening poses; proceeds go to Children's Heart Institute at Children's National Medical Center.(3838 Northampton St. NW. Massage: 1-5 p.m. Feb. 12. $225-$250; Yoga for the Heart: 1:30-2:45 p.m. Feb. 13. Pay what you can; Suggested donation $10-$80.)

Massage for Friends and Couples and Better-Than-Chocolates Partner Yoga
Willow Street Yoga is serving up Valentine's Day options at each of its locations. Learn basic massage techniques at the Takoma Park location or head to Silver Spring for a workshop that teaches how to assist your partner in different yoga postures. (Massage: 6930 Carroll Ave. Suite 100, Takoma Park. 1:30-3:30 p.m. Feb. 12. $95; partners yoga: 8561 Fenton St., Silver Spring. 1:30-4 p.m. Feb. 13. $70.)

Yoga Means Union: Partner Yoga
Maybe you didn't even know you had a heart chakra (think of it as a whirling wheel of energy), but the downtown location of Tranquil Space is going to help you find it during this two-hour workshop. (1632 17th St. NW. 3-5 p.m. Feb. 12. $30-$35 for individuals; $50-$55 for couples.)

Valentine's Partner Yoga Extravaganza
The Studio DC is offering a yoga class you can take with you. Take the two-hour workshop of partner-assisted practice and relaxation and you'll get a handout of all of the postures covered during class, so you can practice on your own. There will be chocolate truffles, too. (2469 18th St. NW. 2-4 p.m. Feb. 13. $40-$50 for individuals; $65-$85 per couple.)

Valentine's Partner Yoga -- Not Just for Couples!
Yoga District, known for offering affordable classes, is doing its part to help out both couples and the non-attached this Valentine's Day. Those who show up alone will be paired up for this two-hour workshop that touts deep relaxation and post-practice chocolate. While the current workshop is almost at capacity, stay tuned to the Yoga District Web site, because they may open up a second class. UPDATE: Yoga District added a 2:45 class on Saturday at its Dupont Studio as well as a 1 p.m. class on Sunday at the studio in Bloomingdale. (1910 14th Street NW. 3-5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12. $20 suggested donation. )

At Past Tense we've been hosting a monthly Date Night class for over a year. Instead of the usual dinner-and-a-movie date night routine, we host a couples' yoga class. It's an open level, Vinyasa-style class and after participants are welcomed at Radius, a New York-style pizzeria, where they get a special Date Night discount. The class costs $20 per couple. The next one will be February 12, for Valentine's Day.
