Free and Easy: Fashion Photography and Persian New Year

By Jess Righthand

Free this week: A Brahms concert, Indian snake dances and a documentary about fashion photographer Bill Cunningham.

Open rehearsal with Christoph Eschenbach
The music director of the National Symphony Orchestra conducts an open rehearsal of Brahms's Third Symphony with the University of Maryland Symphony Orchestra.

Gulabo Sapera
As part of the Kennedy Center's Maximum India festival, Gulabo Sapera dances Kalbelia, a celebratory style traditionally performed by snake charmers.

One-Hour Magazine
Make as much art as you can in one hour and then work with others to critique, collaborate, revise and reinvent your work to ultimately co-produce a cohesive digital "magazine" available for free download. Light food and drink served.

'Bill Cunningham New York'
The Hirshhorn Museum holds a screening of the film about New York Times fashion photographer Bill Cunningham, who turned his lens on the streets of Manhattan as if they were the runways of Paris. The screening precedes the film's official release on March 16 in New York.

'The Memory of Water'
Welsh and Chinese artist Choichun Leung will be present at a reception for her solo exhibition, which combines watercolor with lyrical abstractions of Chinese characters.

Second Saturday Art Walk
Tour seven different studio buildings with work from more than 150 visual artists, attend one of several open artist receptions or, from 7 to 8 p.m., bring along your yarn and needles and join the fiber arts group.

'Nowruz! A Persian New Year Celebration'
Storyteller Xanthe Gresham performs tales from the Persian epic poem "Shahnama" and the Mamak Khadem Ensemble gives two live performances. Other activities include puppet-making, board games, dancing and a scavenger hunt.
