GSA Squabbles -- Again
GovernmentExecutive.com did a nice and necessary piece last week about the latest contretemps involving the General Services Administration office of inspector general.
You may recall that members of the the IG counsel's office last fall accused IG Brian Miller and his top aides of misconduct. Kevin Buford, who was then office counsel, said they had violated personnel rules and retaliated against subordinates who complained, according to documents shared with Government Inc.
Buford asked the President's Council on Integrity and Efficiency, in two diffferent letters, for an investigation of Miller and his former deputy Robert Samuels.
The complaint followed a long-running disputes between Miller and GSA chief Lurita Doan over how the IG's office ought to be run and over allegations about Doan's behavior.
Anyway, the GovernmentExecutive story by Robert Brodsky said that the president's council had dismissed the complaints.
"I have been informed by the PCIE that at its January 2008 meeting it reviewed the matter (a personnel detail) that I referred to them on Oct. 1, 2007, and which was supplemented in December 2007," the aritlce said Miller's statement read. "The PCIE rejected the allegations, closed the entire matter, and returned it back to me. They found that there was no substantial likelihood of any violations of law, regulations, mismanagement, waste of funds or abuse of authority."
Oh, and by the way, attorneys interested in working for the IG and the American taxpayers should raise their hands. That's according to an e-mail sent out by the IG's office not long ago. The email was sent out after Buford and other lawyers in his office departed the GSA. It calls on people interested in civil fraud actions, appropriations law, ethics, etc.
"Colleagues, the GSA OIG Office of Counsel is short-handed and seeks attorneys," the Jan. 24 e-mail begins.
