Nuke Detection
The Department of Homeland Security's multibillion-dollar plans for nuclear detection will come under scrutiny again tomorrow, during a House Homeland Security Committee hearing.
At issue now is a report by an independent group formed by DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff after Congress, the Government Accountability Office and others raised questions.
Readers of The Post and Government Inc. will be familiar with the litany of issues relating to the department's Domestic Nuclear Detection Office's handling of testing of a new kind of radiation detection machines called advanced spectroscopic portal monitors.
GAO allegations include misleading Congress about the effectiveness of the costly machines, fudging on tests of the machines and more, all of which DNDO officials deny.
Witnesses include Elaine C. Duke, deputy undersecretary for management, and Vayl Oxford, the DNDO director.
Stay tuned. This stuff may seem obscure -- okay, it is very technical -- but it's important, involves boatloads of money and has been clouded by big-time unanswered questions about what's going on.

The fiasco in Iraq is chock full of our tax money being misspent in just the same way.
Pres Bush says it will take 50 years of history for his reign to be appreciated and lauded, but it will only take a couple of years after his cover-up staff leaves office with him to discover how much waste and fraud the "CEO president's" idiot outsourcing scheme has cost us.
