GSA, Networx and Money

The GSA has been on a bumpy ride for a couple of years, but it still occupies a central place in government procurement.

Consider the OMB memo last week regarding the $68 billion Networx contracts for telecom services. The memo essentially mandates that agencies use the deal -- or spend a lot of time studying and justifying alternatives, according to a story at NextGov.com.

From the story:

"'They're sort of saying it's a mandatory source,' said Ray Bjorklund, senior vice president and chief knowledge officer for FedSources Inc., a market research firm in McLean, Va. 'They are not explicitly declaring it to be mandatory, but this is as close as I've seen. [They're saying] you've got to prove to us or your CIO why it makes better business sense to migrate away from this path.'"

It will be worth following how the government makes use of the giant telecom deals -- in part to see if agencies get the savings projected by GSA officials, in part to see how much the government actually spends through the deals.

Nothing is for sure -- nevermind the hype -- particularly when billions are at stake.
