Food Review: Pat's Pizza

Being a teenager, I am naturally addicted to pizza from any source, at any day, at any time. However, I must say that the pizza I got from Pat's Pizza in the club level behind section 213 was some of the greatest that has ever entered my digestive system. Unlike the Papa John's pizza back at good old RFK, this pizza was cooked in an open flame oven and was almost always served hot. No bringing out pizza from the freezer in back for the workers at Pat's. They are generous with the toppings and there is no price difference between pepperoni and cheese, which, being a pepperoni guy, is a plus.

Still, as with all things sold at a stadium, price is a huge concern. I thought it would be impossible to sell a slice of pizza for $6.50, but the money makers of the Nationals found a way. If you are too young to legally buy beer like me, or you simply don't like alcohol, the cost of a slice and soda comes to $11. This price already has the outrageous 10% "stadium" tax added in.

One thing that does make Pat's worthwhile, however, is that it is actually cheaper than other pizza venues in the park. Slice Down the Line and Pentagon Pizza, behind sections 224 and 241 respectively, charge $8 for a single slice (that's a whole 1.50 more than Pat's for those that are challenged at math like me). The other thing is that the pizza is only slightly bigger in size and vastly inferior in quality (it reminded me of the pizza at RFK; must've been the leftovers from last year).

Unfortunately Pat's is only accessible for those with seats that are in the club level between sectoins 205 and 221, because the ushers will send you back if your ticket is for a different section. But if you do have the appropriate tickets, if you love pizza, and if money truly is no object, you will definitely love Pat's.

The previous poster must make $300K a year. Honestly, the prices are too high for most concessions and many of the tickets to see the Nationals. The Lerners will be making a nice profit from this ballpark.

I never understand the fascination with eating ball park food and why people will wait three or four innings in line for a specialty hot dog.

Go to the game, watch the game. Eat anytime before or after. Sheesh!

Baseball's very anthem anthem includes a reference to concessions.

If they wanted you to just sit there and watch the game, it would have said...

Take me out to the ballgame
Again, just specifically only the game
Buy me a ticket but eat before you leave
I don't care as long as I watch all 7 hours of baseball without interruption or bathroom breaks and specifically without food of any kind

... which would have sucked.

For God's sake, what is wrong with wanting to buy food at the ballpark? Horrors!

Personally, I found this to be helpful, since I didn't scout out every single concession stand to see what they offered (I stayed on the lower level).

At one point -- say middle of the 5th -- one of the Mayorga coffee stands ran out of change and out of milk. Their answer: make hot chocolate with water and no milk in your coffee. Ok, I can accept that, begrudgindly. But, the solution to no change was to raise the price of a cup of coffee or chocolate (when its in the high 30's in the stands) from $4.50 to $5.00 so they wouldn't have to make change. A high price even higher. Management better make some changes!

If I wanted to eat before or after and not move, I'd plop my plump rear on my couch and watch a game on TV for free, have some beer from the fridge and my own ballpark frank. In fact, I could even pause my TIVO while I get a beer and grill the dog. But it just ain't the same.

Going to a game is about an experience.

My friend Harry likes Pizza too. With him its pizza in the morning, pizza in the evening, pizza at suppertime. When Harry's getting hungry its gonna be pizza everytime.

My point was why do people stand in line for an hour and a half for food and miss three or four innings of a game they paid an arm and a leg to go see.

I don't get it.

I go to see the game, food is secondary. Obviously it is a different situation if you bring kids along but to me, no restaurant is worth waiting an hour and a half for.

Did they have hot dog, peanut and beer ventors patrolling the stands?

I read on the Nats web site you can bring in certain food items. I plan to do this.

Welcome to the world of big time sports, kid. The City gets most of the concession revenue to pay off the stadium price a lot of you are complaining about. The Lerners share will go to Zims huge huge contract.

As for Mayorga, I do not think it will be an issue in May onward, do y'all?

Mayorga will be popular in April, May, and September- so about half the season, give or take some warm weather. Sure came in handy last night, though.

I don't blame the Lerners or the vendors for the ridiculous prices of food/drinks at the ball park because I obvious buy them myself. Its like buying food/medicine/insert-random-product/drinks at a convenience store. You could make the trek to a grocery store of a big distributor to save 10-20% but is it worth the time and trip? The very defining reason a "convenience fee" exists.

But going back to prices: People are forking over the dollars. So why should they lower prices? If you are selling equal amounts of hotdogs wouldn't it make more sense to charge higher prices and make more profit?

Just stay within your means my friend because at the end of the day, thats all that really matters right?

I agree with Kyra. I don't mind travelling through half the park to get to the vendor I want, but not being able to purchase food from a specific vendor because my tickets are for a different (better?) section is stupid and unfair.

To those who worry about price: Obviously you have never been to many sport venues, or even hotels. This is the way it is. Get over it!! If you want cheap, go home, turn on the TV and get a frozen pie at Walmart(and don't forget your 1.00 off coupon you clipped out of Sunday's Post!!

Pentagon Pizza? Let me guess: the board says a slice will take 5 minutes and cost $3.75, but when you get to the front they tell you that due to unforeseeable complications the wait has been extended to 20 minutes and the cost has doubled.

I thought you came across as quite rational, Sam. I've wondered the same thing. To me ballpark food always meant a hotdog and a beer, okay, several beers, so I've never understood this obsession with having multiple food options at stadiums. It always reminds me of the Simpsons episode when Marge and Homer went to some pseudo-Inner Harbor, order totally different things, then you see that all the eateries in the place are serving the same thing from the same vat deep in the bowels of the building. I know its not quite the same, but it all boils down to the fact that you are getting salty, fatty fast food. All that these premium options do is give them the chance to charge you ten dollars for a hot dog.

Pizza has the distinction of being one of the only foods that is virtually impossible to mess up. The most blackened, driest, oldest slice is still pretty good: it's still pizza. I can safely say I've never met a pizza I didn't like.

Even so, it sounds like Pat's merits sneaking the club level. I have a pretty good collection of fake mustaches...

The food was pretty good. I've been to ballparks up and down the coast. Fenway still has the best food though :) The only problem I have are the prices of food. Yes, baseball stadium food costs more. But, really...$7.50 for a beer? $4.50 for a soda? Come on...

Like me, most are concerned with the prices, but going to the ballpark for the first time I expected to pay more for food/beer. So I was not as shocked as those who posted here. If you're going to the ballpark or any stadium for that matter, you know you will be paying up the wazoo for anything and everything bought at such a venue. Just go with that mindset or eat before hand like others have suggested.

I second the cheers for Pat's Pizza. That is the best pizza in a ball park I've ever had. Clearly a super plus on the club level.
