Devin Thomas says he's earned a spot on the field

LaVar talked with Redskins wide receiver Devin Thomas on DC50's "SportsWeek." Thomas told him that he believes he deserves to play but "for some reason ... the coaches do not believe in me to make the plays."

Here are excerpts:

LaVar:: "Why is it not coming together for them to put Devin Thomas onto the field?"

Thomas: "I don't have the answer for you. I feel like maybe Coach Shanahan has it and he doesn't want to tell us, because I don't know."

LaVar: "But you feel you have done everything possible to earn your way onto the field."

Thomas: "Exactly. Exactly. ... It's tough on me, but I know, like, my teammates tell me, you know, it's like, man, you need to be out there. ... I have the talent. I have the abilities. I know the scheme. You know, I have the mentality. I have everything, you know, all the intangibles to do it. But for some reason I can't get the chance on the field. The coaches do not believe in me to make the plays."

Here's the clip:

Cutting Devin Thomas will haunt this team for years. We are talking about perennial pro bowler potential, and yet Shanny wouldn't even give the guy a chance. Pretty unbelievable. Shanny has systematically dismantled the 2008 draft class. He's buried guys like Horton on the depth chart, Kelly on IR, and it won't take long for Thomas to get snatched up by another team. He will have a lot of suitors.

Just like Rinehart is now with the Jets, Mitchell is now with the Vikings, Tryon is now with the Colts, and Thomas will soon be with another team.

Shanny needs to put his ego aside and understand that just bc Vinny Cerrato drafted a guy, doesn't necessarily make him damaged goods.

Problem is Barno, Thomas had trouble getting on the field when Zorn was the coach.

Yeah, he'll catch on somewhere else, but that doesn't mean nearly as much as you think it does.

CapsNut, he started 10 games last year under Zorn. And that was with a healthy Malcolm Kelly and Randle El on the squad. Let's not compare Shanny's utter refusal to give Thomas a chance with Zorn giving him 10 starts last year.

Remember this game? Check out the moves at the 3:00 mark. How do you cut this guy without even giving him a chance?

How could he do any worse than the other junk recievers on this team not named Moss? At least he should have been given a chance, but Shanahan's ego didn't want to be shown up if Devin performed. Are we averaging 30 points a game with the recievers having a big year? Not!!! Good luck DT. You deserved better treatment and sometimes the closing of one door, prepares you for the opening of another.

10 starts in 32 games under Zorn, hardly proof-positive of his worth let alone his "Pro-Bowl Potential" Barno.

Oh, and A,R-E sucked last year and was one of the first Shanahan causalities.

Yeah, we were thin at Wide Receiver, even with Thomas, but if he's going to shoot his mouth off like that, then Shanny got every right to cut him.

Don't get me wrong, I liked him as a kick-returner and he can have a good career in the NFL as a special teams player. But we're not at practice everyday and quite frankly, Shanahan has a resume that give him a little bit of leeway when it comes to making personnel decisions.

The fact that Malcolm Kelly got stuck on IR (rather than getting dumped with an injury settlement check in his hand) and Thomas gets cut is disgraceful. Nobody is suggesting that Thomas is Andre Johnson, but he's a hell of a lot better than Kelly could ever dream of being.

C'mon guys Barno obviously knows more about finding and coaching Pro Bowl players than Mike Shannahan and Bruce Allen.

Dude, Thomas line up at WR in 30 of 32 games under Zorn and was in line to start this season the way he finished off last year. Comparing Shanny's refusal to let him play WR in a game to Zorn playing him at WR in 30 of 32 games is idiotic. There is no comparison.

Amusing. By that silly logic, I can say that Poopy thinks he knows more than whichever coach/GM ends up signing Thomas (and there will be plenty of suitors Poop).

You still don't quite know how to make a coherent, logical, or pertinent comment Poopy. One day Poop, keep believing in yourself, it will happen.

Yeah, but would McNabb throw to him in a clinch? His route-running was erratic, and McNabb couldn't trust him to be where he was supposed to be.

As a kick-returner, OK, but that' was about it.

Posted by: pberger1 | October 9, 2010 4:04 PM | Report abuse

Can't put this on McNabb. The coaching staff and front office are responsible for this. I don't like getting rid of a second round pick from just 2 years ago when he showed plenty of potential and was never given a chance this year even though we are desperate for receivers. This will go down as a huge blunder for this team.

Posted by: Barno1 | October 9, 2010 5:21 PM | Report abuse

Why would an NFL coach, not play a player "that can do everything?" Maybe because he can't. Shanny knows more about talent than all of us combined. He would never let this guy get away, if he is as "great" as he says he is. Come on. Let the Coach have some freedom to build a legit team. This guy has been here long enough, and frankly ....has failed. All it's going to take is for the skins to get a top 10 receiver in the draft, and noone will ever remember DT.

i looks to me like this staff is clearing house of all the players that feel like theyve won something n havent done anything. theres a reason y the skins loose to teams like the rams..

Barno, put the gun to your head and don't miss this time, cuz your those wasted vital organs could actually still be of use to others. But your idiotic feedback is like watching a retard make his own fantasy football team.
Yeah, we get it. DT is awesome. I'll be sure to look for your comments after he gets cut from the UFL and arena leagues.

I don't know why people are so in-love with DT. This guy's way out of his head and thinks too highly of himself instead of thinking that there will always be room for improvement. It's a new era. You don't get starting jobs now just because you were drafted and high and there were high hopes on you, it's all about making the most when your number is called. DT can't even run a simple fade route lol!

Any Redskin fan who has much followed the team under the Shanihans knew that Devin Thomas was going to be released. None of us who are not privy to meetings and practices know for sure the chemistry or lack of it between Devin and the Shanihans. But we do know that he was not one of "their" guys, that he is a holdover from the previous regime, which was not half as bad as it has been painted for lo these many months since the Second Coming of "the" Super Bowl Coach.
But looking around the roster, one does not see a lot of depth and quality at catching the pigskin. For the life of me, I do not see how the Redskins could do worse with Devin on the team than without him. Check back with me at the bye week. We will know by then if this was a boneheaded, egotistical decision that we have come to expect from the Allen-Shanny team.

Thomas is a chump and should be dumped. Tell me Anything this clown has done? ZIP. He talks a good game about his skills and what teammates are saying but he's not getting it done in practice. He's another looser in a wasted draft regardless of who picked him. Remember guys, a good college player doesn't mean a good NFL player. He believed the hype and thought he could slide into a starting position. These boys need to stop listening to their posses and do the work. He's got a hard on just like Lavar another chump who got traded and never did another thing but piss and moan. It's a same you just can't kick their asses and get the dumb ass attitude out of their system.

Look at the kind of vitriol that is spewed for simply expressing an opinion that Devin Thomas was a good football player. Your comment says a whole lot about you pgugino. I feel sorry for your parents, obviously they didn't too a good job raising you.

@Barno1

you do know Marko Mitchell got cut by the Vikings a while ago right? he hasn't been with the team since before the regular season began...

Totally agree with your logic barno; dont agree with lashing back at a fellow skins fan.
Listen to yourselves. As a skins fan you support football; a sport about blood, sweat and tears. Its one thing to say Barno; I disagree, DT11 was not all he sais he is.
But to enter a chat and attack another skins fan; have some dignity for the sport.

And for DT; the skins dont have another wide reciever on that roster that can take a 2-3 spot. Im high on Armstrong; but we got guys on that WR line that are as old as the WR coach. Sign galloway as a coach; give DT the 2-3 spot and Shanny needs to let his ego pass for this one.

I wonder what Whiney and Fatboy, opps Lavar and Dukes are going to complain about tonight? Which one of his Homies got Dis'd? Which caller is an idiot for disagreeing with him? How he was so great and the skins Mngmnt are idiots? I think I will pass on Lavars studdering ebonics and enjoy another station, again :)

Posted by: cm88 | October 11, 2010 9:06 AM | Report abuse

Btw, 3-2 without DT11 and basically without FatAL, I think I will go ahead and trust the coaches/GM over Lavar and the haters for a bit longer.

Go Skins!!!!!!!!! Been a long time since its been fun to watch, even if they do like to make it close.

Posted by: cm88 | October 11, 2010 9:09 AM | Report abuse

Devin Thomas cleared waivers. 31 other teams could have claimed him, and he would be theirs...none of them did.

The Rams lost Mark Clayton for the year with a knee injury yesterday. They need WR help desperately. They've said they have no interest in even bringing DT11 in for a workout.

Clearly, this guy is the next Jerry Rice.
