    Obama touts endorsements by seniors, doctors groups

    Ina surprise briefing room appearance, President Obama said Thursday he is "extraordinarily pleased and grateful" for the AARP and American Medical Association endorsements of the health care reform legislation moving through the House of Representatives.

    After Sen. Max Baucus introduced a $856 billion health-care bill, the Senate Finance Committee debated the bill seeking to decrease the cost for middle-class families and keep it from adding to the federal deficit.

    As members of Congress meet with constituents during the August recess, strong emotions on proposed health reform are turning town hall meetings into demonstrations and shouting matches during a critical month in the debate.

    Obama repeated his belief that he will achieve a health care bill. He said he remained open to any ideas that could lead to a compromise -- but only if they led to cost savings.
