House Republicans Seek to Engage Obama on Reform
By Ceci Connolly
House Republicans appear to be angling for a White House invite, or at the very least some props on the subject of health reform.
In a letter to President Obama, the GOP leadership writes that they share some of his principles when it comes to improving care in America and reducing the number of people who do not have insurance -- now estimated at 46 million. By their assessment, the Republican lawmakers also agree with Obama that insurers shouldn't be allowed to deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions and that promoting healthier lifestyles should be part of the reform effort.
But that's where the common ground seems to end. In the letter, the nine House leaders raise the ugly prospect of rationing and "empowering government bureaucrats," two themes taken straight out of the playbook of GOP word-meister Frank Luntz.
"We respectfully request a meeting," the letter concludes.
No word on whether Obama's got an opening on his calendar.
