Surveying the Landscape
By Ceci Connolly
Health reform takes center stage this summer, as congressional committees begin work on sweeping legislation to overhaul one-sixth of the nation’s economy.
During the presidential campaign, Barack Obama promised to extend health coverage to millions of uninsured Americans, rein in skyrocketing costs and improve care nationwide.
Since taking office, he has created a new White House Office for Health Reform and convened a summit to get the debate started. He’s asked lawmakers to draft legislation that tackles the Big 3: access, cost and quality.
Obama’s critics, and even some allies, fret that Washington policymakers already have too much on their plate to deal with an issue as complex, costly and controversial as health care. Obama counters that addressing health spending—for families, businesses and government—is a key step in restoring a strong economy.
On Capitol Hill, no fewer than three House committees and two Senate panels are involved in crafting bills. Their self-imposed deadline is Labor Day. If lawmakers are not near agreement by then, Democrats say they will invoke a procedural maneuver called reconciliation that would enable them to pass a bill with a simple 51-vote majority in the Senate.

All I know is that something has got to be done with the health care system in the US. My husband and I have retiree insurance through his previous employer and we pay over $13,000 a year for our insurance. And that is with a $600 deductible and $3200 stop loss.
I have high hopes that President Obama can finally get a plan into place that the american people can afford.

The only thing controversial about health care is where the profits and money go. Take out the greed, and the complexity and controversy disappear.
Medicare for all, with payments negotiated directly with providers, would simplify greatly the structure of our health-care system and it would reduce by 500% or more the cost of delivery.

We need to look at all options--put everything on the table--including single payer. Right now, that option isn't on the table, probably due to intensive lobbying by the healthcare industry. Health care used to be run by non-profits; it's time to return to that system.

People who are for the single payer option should know this is going to be a major fight. The insurance companies are already fighting this with everything they have. They know that they are fighting for their lives because if this becomes a reality their mega profits will end. They will have to become competitive to even survive.
Yes we deserve the same HEALTHCARE POLICY/PLAN that all members of congress are provided with. SOCIALIZED BY US the taxpayers. We will not only have to fight the insurance companies but our own members of congress. The insurance company lobbyists have these politicians in their pockets big time. Were you aware that Senator Max Baucus (D) who heads the finance committee working on Health Care Reform will not even allow single payer representation at the table? He is having the representatives of single payer (doctors, nurses etc)who try to attend ejected and even in some cases arrested.
If we want representation and reform we
must all become activists. President Obama cannot fight all these battles alone. We need to show him what we want and that we will support him in this.
Write your senators, representatives and most of all, President Obama on the first day of every month. Even if you have to write a letter, copy it and remail it every month. These politicians must know that we are serious about this and we know their names, what they are doing and that we are going to hold them accountable. If congress deserves good health care so do each of us.

The only solution to our health care problems is a Single Payer National Health Plan. It can be done "American-style", and those working in the health insurance industry now can be helped to make the transition (see the HR676 bill for details).
It will immediately cut costs simply by changing all the paper work to a single payer system. It will provide health care for everyone. It will help business because they will no longer need to pay for employees health care. It will prevent Amercians from going bankrupt because of medical care.
We will no longer pay our insurance fees or premiums which will more than make up for a reasonable tax increase.
I respect what President Obama is trying to do, but his half-measure reform will not work. We need to shift to a single payer system now.
Americans should not be afraid to make this change. It is a system that works. Ask for the Single Payer Health Care system to be put on the table for serious discussion and comparison. The only reason it is not there now is because of lobbying interests who have self-interest in keeping things the way they are.
No one, not even those who work in the insurance industry, should be afraid of this change. It is the future, and it will be a future style of health care that we are all thankful for.

I have health insurance coverage and have been covered all my adult life because I've been blessed to have worked without a layoff or being unemployed. As I near retirement, my concern is for my children and grandchild. Healthcare for all Americans should not be contingent on employment. We should have healthcare for all and for those who want the "Rolls Royce" options, they should be allowed to purchase supplemental coverage. If we don't do this now....WHEN????

I hope that healthcare reform that gives Americans a public plan can be accomplished this year and believe that the Obama Admin can handle this endeavor with hardly a blip on the screen of everything else Obama is trying to achieve.
However, I distinctly remember when Candidate Obama told the electorate that he wanted us to have 'THE SAME HEALTHCARE POLICY/PLAN' that all congress officials had which is SOCIALIZED BY US, THE TAXPAYER. This is the plan/policy that I want because I know they have the very BEST plan/policy that anyone in America can have. Even if we can't have it for free [as they do], we should be able to have it at a very minimal cost.
If this is NOT accomplished this year, I doubt we will ever see a public healthcare package for all Americans. Also, one would think that when you include the majority of 320 million citizens in any endeavor, the cost would be so affordable as to leave extra funds to help the poor or disadvantaged for practicably nothing.
