Obama Urges Nationwide Health-Care Campaign

By Sarah Lovenheim

The Democratic National Committee's growing political machine coined "Organizing for America" (OFA) received a letter from President Obama today asking members to devote the same sort of "grassroots movement that shocked the political establishment" during the presidential campaign to pushing health-care reform.

"The campaign to pass real health care reform in 2009 is the biggest test of our movement since the election. Once again, victory is far from certain," he said.

Obama called for a "coast-to-coast" campaign in which organizers will knock on doors and recruit volunteers to promote health-care reform, suggesting OGA recipients think about the "millions of families on the brink" as they deploy across the country.

OGA's work during the presidential campaign should be considered "a down payment to earn us our place at this crossroads in history," Obama said, concluding in his letter: "All that you've done has led up to this -- and whether or not our country takes the next crucial step depends on what you do right now."
