Democrats Launch Web Site Targeting "Republican Lies" on Health Care

By Ceci Connolly

The Democratic political machine is firing back against what it says are "Republican lies on health insurance reform." The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which supports House Democratic candidates, unveiled a new website Thursday "dedicated to exposing the truth-twisting attack by Republicans and their fringe right-wing groups."

As House Democrats returned to their home districts this week, many have been confronted by sharp criticism of the health-reform bill approved in three committees. In some cases, the attacks have been spearheaded by conservative groups, such as Freedom Works, an advocacy organization headed by former House majority leader Richard K. Armey (R-Tex.). The result has been a tense early August for lawmakers, activists and the political parties.

The Democrats' "Health Care Fact Check" web site features photos of prominent Republicans such as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ge.) and House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) with a phrase attributed to each and "FALSE" in large red print.

At the same time, conservatives are accusing the Obama administration of collecting a list of people who oppose health care reform.

"I guess President Obama is unhinged by the prospect of something entrenched in the American political tradition: Dissent," Tony Perkins, head of the Family Research Council, says in a new video.

Perkins is reacting to a blog posting on www.whitehouse.gov which encourages supporters to report anything "fishy" on the health care front.

This smacks of "McCarthyism" at the very least & may be closer to Nazism. To dissent is our right as American citizens. How can Obama say there is disinformation when he hasn't read the bill! And many Congressmen haven't either. The way the Democrats are heading us toward socialism is scary. Why can't we slow down, read and really know what is going to happen to us if this Health Care Bill is passed. We are already in debt that threatens to bankrupt the country. This Health Care Bill will add over 1 TRILLION to that debt. And don't believe them when they say you can keep your private insurance. The public payer plan will put all our insurance out of business.

I find it funny that FedupwithFed (and other right-wingers) call President Obama a "socialist" and then accuse the President of "McCarthyism".

Can people say hypocrisy?

exactly why is it OK for moveon.org to sit outside polls this past november and antagonize people but its not OK for people against some of the parts of the bills to voice their concerns??

why is there a double standard??

To joy1951: You don't need a Website; you've got KOZ!

The entire Republican Party seems to be in a panic mode. What they are doing is not helping them.

The emocrat Senators who are bringing in Union and Acorn to the townhall meetings, shoving, pushing and intimidating their real constituents are not representing their constituents, are not providing answers and information to their constituents. This is not representative government-this is government by terrorism and intimidation. Noone pay taxes. No taxation without respresentation and Obama and the Democrats are NOT representing you.

To alb24B448th1: A great many of the "mobs" that are represented at the tea parties and the healthcare townhalls are not Republicans but americans of all persuasions who object to this rapid shoving of socialist properties down their throats. You don't need to be a republican to recognize that, just be observant. Have you read the house bill on healthcare? It's posted on the net, so read it and be afraid.

I work in healthcare and have heard vendors talk about what they can and can not do in countries like Britain and Canada that have a single payor government healthcare system. They do not get the very best and most costly technology many times because it costs too much, but how much is a life worth? Just say NOBAMACARE!

Maybe The John Birch Society was right after all; flouride in the water finally did give Americans Mad Cow Disease.

Or maybe these right-wing loonies are victims of excessive anal-probing by aliens!

The United States suffered for eight years under the totalitarian fantasies of Republicans who styled themselves rulers, not leaders. Finally, last November, Americans collectively said, "Oops! Let's try something else." Now Republicans, Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan are pouting. Incapable of civil doscussion, all they can do is scream and shout down their intellectual and moral superiors.

I have never seen an adimistration attacking its own American citizens! Reminds me of the night of the long knives. Also, remember when East German was open after the fall of the Berlin Wall, there were millions of cards on each East Berliner that the Stasi kept? Neighbors spying on neighbors and reporting to the "government". Which reminds me of the White House's command to report all e-mails, etc. that are considered "miss information." No wonder American Citizens are up in arms. It is now 1984 and Big Brother just came a few years later.

"I have never seen an adimistration attacking its own American citizens! "

Wow! Where were you the last eight years? Certainly not the United States where Li'l George Bush ruled as a theocratic dictator before a cowering Congress. I guess the Ku Klux Klan loved it, but the rest of us thought it sucked.

The German reference by PalmSpringsGirl is funny.

The obsessive authoritarianism expressed by Republicans, and practiced in the recent Bush administration, is sometimes regarded as a development of the last quarter century, but American history shows that Republicans in the 1930s either counseled neutrality as Hitler rampaged through Europe or actively supported Nazi Germany.

First:

Last I checked, debate involved presenting and listening to argument (that is to say, a logical thesis backed up by facts) from two sides; a protagonist and an antagonist.

Corporations hiring out fakes and recruiting volunteers to shout down elected representatives at town hall meetings certainly doesn't qualify as debate.

However, sending in such thugs to disrupt public gatherings was a classic technique of the national socialist party in Germany in the 20's, 30's and 40's. They also were known to gut republican forms of government under the guise of legality.
If the lunatic right wingers would return to reality for a few seconds, they might see themselves in a mirror and smell the smell of hypocrisy.

Second:
The amendments about seniors choices near the end of their lives would give them better control (and medicare funding) for living wills. Hmmm..doesn't sound like putting them to death to me. Even more interesting is the fact that the amendments were put in by republicans.

Hmmm...facts...what an interesting concept.

God forbid but we in Africa, are looking up to America as a beacon of hope right from passing people friendly laws to anything. If the politicking takes on this trend where people prefer to tread a slippery line to fail good policies, its really unfortunate.

The issues that the Town Hall protesters are upset about are not "made up scare tales" thought up by the Republicans. Read the bill. All of the issues are right there in the bill. Medicare will be cut by $500,000,000. Yes, Seniors will receive "end of life counseling", but I don't think it is just "living wills". Would it need to be every 5 years for that? It also talks about viability of care and cost effectiveness of expensive procedures. And it mentioned the funding for providing information for assisted suicide. Sounds like euthanasia to me. It provides for abortion, too. Listen up, right to lifers! Obama wants to get rid of those the most vulnerable, those who are unproductive, who "cost the most in medical care". I wonder if members of Congress who are 65 or older will be forced to receive "end of life counseling?" You know the answer to that. All this on top of a huge bureaucracy telling us what kind of, and when we can get healthcare, adding trillions more to the deficit, and (of course) not raising taxes??????? How many more lies are we going to hear? All this from a man who apoligizes for America and her heritage, calls us a "secular" nation, refuses to go to a prayer breakfast that all other Presidents have gone to, won't let a plane fly over a "God and Country" festival (as has been done for 40 years) bows down to Arabs, and turns against little Israel, our ally, surrounded by implacable enemies who want to destroy her, when we are her only ally. He hates our history, and our heritage. He has no use for our forefathers. He is determined to make America into a socialist/Marxist country. Remember, he studied with Bill Ayers, who wrote about and studied Karl Marx. I am heartsick for America. We need to wake up and stop this healthcare bill. If it gets through Obama and his followers will have complete control over 1/6 of our economy, and control and details of each of our lives.

The non partisan "Factcheck.org has pretty much stated that pretty much all of the Republican fear tactics are pretty much that.Fear tactics and false.

The one most interesting is the Republican assertions about euthanasia and the elderly. Nothing factual at all. In fact the reverse. The Republican intent seems to be to make sure that the average elderly person remain relatively ignorant about things like living wills and durable power of attorney so that it is easier to get them to sign the things simply by telling them its in their best interest, when it is more in the interest of the insurance companies to have them sign them in order to avoid the expense of life support, etc.

As it is written, HR3200 puts more power into the hands of the elderly and their families as it requires not only that the elderly have these things clearly explained to them, but requires them to be given lists of third parties that have no economic interests in advising them one way or the other.

Nothing is better for the elderly than to have someone who does not have an economic interest in them signing a living will advising them on whether to do so or not.

My favorite right wing rant at one of those disruptions that the Republicans are instigating was the elderly man in South Carolina who was screaming "Keep the government out of my Medicare"

It affirmed my belief that hydrogen in not the most common element in the universe, ignorance is.

Yes Medicare will be cut by 500 million simply by eliminating the perquisite higher rates that Bush offered to HMO's to ration the health care of the elderly. They got paid MUCH higher amounts to take care of the elderly by providing much less service. A number of government and non government agencies have examined the Bush created HMO option and simply determined that it was a case of the government paying more and the elderly getting less

As the New England Journal of Medicine said

"The Medicare-HMO Revolving Door — The Healthy Go in and the Sick Go Out"

This was perhaps the worse program to ever be offered by Medicare and of course it was offered by the last Republican Administration. Studies have been consistent. Medicare HMO's exist simply to increase profits of the providers and decrease the health of the patients.

Another Republican fear tactic. The cuts to Medicare come from getting rid of the extra money paid to the HMOs, raise the amount that they give to doctors, hospitals and other direct providers, and save the rest by removing that extra level of profit taking that exists in at the intermediary HMO level.

Every time there is an agency that comes between the patient and the direct provider there is a loss that has to be created because of the additional layer of profit that is placed there.
