MoveOn Plans Health-Care 'Vigils'

By Dan Eggen
As part of a broad liberal push to counteract conservative opponents, the activist group MoveOn.org says it expects to attract 50,000 participants to 350 health-care "vigils" around the country tonight.

"Participants will light candles, hold pictures, and share the names and stories of those suffering under the current health care system to show the desperate need for a real public health insurance option," MoveOn.org said in statement announcing the events.

The group, which is known for its aggressive Internet-based tactics, will also hold a "virtual vigil" on its website at 1 p.m. EDT this afternoon for those unable to attend the nighttime gatherings. The events will include tributes to the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.), an ardent champion of health-care reform who died last week.

The vigils come amid a flurry of organizing by the Democratic National Committee and other liberal groups as they attempt to regain control of the Washington debate over President Obama's health-care reform plans. After weeks dominated by noisy conservative protests at congressional town-hall meetings, the DNC, MoveOn.org and others in support of reform say they are aiming to refocus attention on the need for dramatic changes to the country's troubled health-care system.

"The stories we have been hearing from our members, which will be heard at the events tonight, show once again that health care reform is not a political game -- it's literally the difference between life or death for many Americans," Justin Ruben, executive director of MoveOn.org, said in a statement. "Everyday that we wait, more people are denied life-saving medical treatment, dropped from their insurance coverage, or buried under medical bills. We hope Congress will see these vigils as a moral call to go back to Washington pass health care reform with a real public health insurance option."

MoveOne should be doing something about healthcare and the Democratic members of Congress who are stonewalling reform. They are so to blame for the lame Democrats we elected. All MoveOn concerned itself about was electing those calling themselves Democrats instead of those calling themselves Republicans, that they didn't care about the quality of the Democrats they helped elect. We need progressive, independent public servants, not people beholden to corporate interests. Maybe MoveOne will reflect on their own self-serving actions in cozying up to powers-that-be.

I thought MoveOn was accepting donations for Democrats from abroad to skirt the rules prohibiting political parties from accepting foreign campaign contributions?

Why would you report on people like that except after they've been indicted?

While they're not perfect, you're a lot more likely to get health care reform under Democrats than you will under Republicans, who would prefer to leave the broken system we have as it is and only pay lip service to reform.

Democrat = some hope of change

Republican = same old song and dance

Right, healthcare is not a political game, but getting into my pocket is? The funds do not drop out of the sky, they are seized from others who produce and make this prosperous nation what it is, that has led to countless medical advancements. There are several countries that have the system you're seeking, please Move On there.

Not true. They just don't feel putting the burden of paying for healthcare for the one's that refuse to take care of them selves. Where as the Dems. will F%^k over all working class people to pander votes from those who live off of the system. WAKE UP @ZZ HOLE!!!! This has nothing to do with healthcare reform it’s about buying votes.

Why the fk can't liberals be consistant. You want the financial system more regulated to deal with greed, which I agree with. Why can't you low life scum sucking liberals do the same with health care.

make ALL insurance companies entities like utilities. COMPLETELY REGULATED. MUST BEG FOR PRICE INCREASES.

your stupid f's want to tax, but you don't want to cut costs. You btch and moan about the greed of insurance companies, but you DO NOTHING TO STOP THAT GREED.

Make them not for profit. Regulate the cost they can charge. Tie it to the rate of inflation.

BUT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, you have to TELL ME who and what I should have to choose. You take it out on tax payers.

Want civil war liberals. I'm ready.

It's amazing, how overnight thousands were available to counter the tea party protesters. What does Pelosi say now? Yes there are many who do need help, but most are paid to offset those opposing government taking control of our lives. Acorn and the SEIU, and other union, and socialist groups are so obvious and will not have credibility. They have rights but clearly have no voice.

They are the party of Fat Corporate American Greeeeed.

Posted by: kkord1 | September 2, 2009 3:09 PM | Report abuse

Now we need to expand health care reform as we know it. This can be easily accomplished.

We close down Homeland Security, whose sole purpose is to gather information on American citizens and turn it into a database, then we close the CIA and pull out of Afghanistan and Iraq.

These actions will provide all the necessary funding to implement a single-payer system and turn a surplus in the budget. And we need to include abortion funding in the legislation.

It seems to me people are squabbling about issues before agreeing on the terms they use. What is the difference between a socialist and a communist, a right winger or left winger? A capitalist? How far right? How far left? What is trickle-down economics? What is your definition of democracy? What is a "banana dictatorship"? An Oligarchy? If competitive sports need rules, regulations, and referees to avoid chaos, does competion in private enterprise need similar controls?

Do polls furnish evidence to back up a viewpoint? Like the weather, polls can change overnight. The debate that is going on over health care and other proposals is not being conducted rationally and people with limited vocabulary are using four letter words to insult opponents, which gets us nowhere.

If the Dems are able to push through this abortion of legislation, the GOP controlled House in will have to starve the Health "Reform" Law of funds. America is broke; this Bill will bankrupt the nation.

It's about time. Tiny numbers from the fringe Republican Party and crazy militias should not dominate the discussion. It's time for the reform-supporting majority to be much more vocal and visible. The priorities should be passing health care reform with public option and spaying or neutering the Blue-Dog Dems. Rev. Bookburn - Raido Volta

No one who has worked in hospitals and clinics for a long period thinks that everything is just fine. Our prosperous nation ranks about right above Albania in some health care measurements. The system is performing beautifully if your goal is the maximum income for hospital CEO's and specialists. Now if you want to consider patients, well, that's entirely different. It's about time the people get out and support President Obama on this one. The democrats need to settle on a bill point blank, is it gonna be public option or something else but this system is broken. You have health insurance company's that make millions for being the middle man, why do we need them? The reason it's not "astro turf" is b/c move on isn't hiding in the shadows, they came out and said they were organizing the events, not hiding in the shadows like the tea baggers, and these health care mobs.

Expanding Medicare is the straightforward way to get the public option that a substantial majority (72% according to a CBS poll from June 2009) of Americans desire. It's not clear what percentage of people who oppose a public option do so because they have swallowed the patently ridiculous disinformation being propagated by the extremists on the far right. Death panels? The government will have access to your bank account? The government-administered plan will lead to more rationing than the profit-hungry insurance companies are already engaged in? If you believe that nonsense then I've got a Kansas beach house to sell you. We pay more for health care in the U.S., by a huge amount, than any other developed nation. Great Britain, for example, pays less than 1/2 of what we do. They pay in taxes, we pay in salary reductions and out-of-pocket expenses that can bankrupt us. And what do we get for that unbelievable cost? A system that is ranked 37th by the WHO. That's just 2 notches above Cuba, for crying out loud! Now some Republicans are worried about the deficit. But didn't Republicans turn a 138 billion dollar surplus they inherited from Clinton into a nearly 1/2 trillion dollar deficit? Granted, that cannot possibly be blamed entirely on one political party, but surely the unnecessary trillion dollar debacle in Iraq and the 1.35 trillion dollar Bush tax cuts (more than 1/2 of which went to the richest 0.1 percent of Americans) didn't help. So, most of the opponents of health insurance reform have a serious credibility problem. It's high time we stop paying attention to the town-hall shriekers and get this health-care system tuned up. The Democratic party is the only party that can get the job done.

The democrats are finding it difficult to put forward an identity.
The peoples party is obviously exposed as the myth that it has always been.
They now like to refer to themselves as "progressives" ........hum...isn't that telling.
That's exactly how Hitler referred to his party...its exactly how Stalin referred to his party..its exactly how the communists in China refer to theirs...
We've had communists in Hollywood from the golden age...and had to ferret them out...there still there....they just call themselves liberals or "progressives".
And the posting here that stated that Acorn, Move On, and the like ...being investigated on corruption and or Rico statutes in the next administration, is right on the money.
Every bill and program that the dems have passed over the years have been a dismal failure.
No more coy disguises .....perhaps ...if you changed your name again...this time being forthright with the American people..they may indeed want to consider voting for your party...but history has shown that Americans dislike communist and their elitist, tyrannical ways.
The moron in the white house will indeed walk all of you worshipers right off a cliff...while chanting "yes we can".
What a collection of idiots.

@HomeOfTheBrave and Fourier1:
You guys need to simmer down and stop the name-calling. You've been out of junior-high for a while now and no one has given you a wedgie since you graduated. Or did you graduate? I'm sorry that your President, the one known as 'W', was such a miserable flop. Although you must be very happy that he turned Clinton's big budget surplus into a nice, big, state-sponsored windfall for the millionaires of the country, in the best of the commie tradition. Sure hope you patriots are as rich as Cheney and enjoyed the handout just as much. Please don't be frightened by all those over-educated do-gooders in office now. It's just that those of us in the country who can actually think, you know, 'them thar dirty libs', like to occasionally see what it's like to have a government not completely mired in ineptitude. No offense now - I'm sure y'all are good fun to drink with, but we just don't want you to go trying to build jet engines or perform heart surgery. Stick to picking up beer cans or collecting unemployment or whatever it is that you're good at. Leave it to the grown-ups to fix the enormous mess created by Bush and the Republicans. We'll even forgive you for all of the shrill name-calling when your brain tumor is discovered and you suddenly turn socialist and start asking for help. Of course, you may want to stick by your Unabomber ideology and operate on yourself with an ice-pick and a claw hammer. Or maybe one of your millionaire friends will intervene on your behalf with the Insurance Company and you won't have to sell everything you own to commission one of those over-educated, surgeon types to do for you what you could never do for yourself. There is a good chance that the surgeon, being literate, will have commie sympathies, though. He may secretly implant a 'socializer chip' in your brain that causes you to stop fantasizing about blowing up government buildings and start thinking about things like how your neighbor is doing. Shoot, you may even find yourself attending an Obama rally and being genuinely happy about an administration that spends its time and energy actually trying to help regular folks rather than plundering the treasury to write welfare checks for hedge-fund managers or starting unnecessary trillion dollar wars that their kids at Yale will CERTAINLY not be fighting in.

We should have had health care reform 40 years ago. I'm old enough to remember these same old jerky arguments the Republican party used then (socialist, do you want to be like_________ [you name the country], do you want a bureaucrat running your health care). As for doing this reform now, during a recession, well, ho hum that's how it goes. If they were really interested in the economy, they would have done this 40 years ago. I personally believe that the recession will end that much quicker without the health insurance industry strangling our GNP.

The reason the unions and movealong.org are so concerned is because in THIS healthcare plan WE THE TAXPAYERS have to pay billions to them •

Page 65 of health care bill: Taxpayers will subsidize all union retiree and community organizer health plans (example: SEIU, UAW and ACORN) Wow! That will certainly help those poor people who can't get insurance, whatever would they do if they couldn't pay off ACORN, SEIU, UAW, etc...for their criminal activities. Think of how ill they would be.

This is not American and these anti-American groups need to be indicted rather than being called on the president to strongarm little old ladies.

Maybe movealong.org is instructing their goons to BITE OFF the finger of the elderly like that pro-Obama health care goon did in California (by the by, LA Times reported it as the anti-Obama guy biting off the finger of the pro-Obama and it was the other way around.

There are copies of the health care bills all over the internet, and you couldn't be troubled to open one and scroll down to page 65 to see if the whacko claim you regurgitated above had anything to do with reality? Here's what p. 65 actually says (in the real world, not in the imaginary world of whatever schitzoid right-wing extremist started the retarded email chain you got your info from):
“Not later than 90 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Health and Human Services shall establish a temporary reinsurance program to provide reimbursement to assist participating employment-based plans with the cost of providing health benefits to retirees and to eligible spouses, surviving spouses and dependents of such retirees.” No mention is made of unions or community organizations.

As a republican for over 50 years, I receintly changed my thinking after seeing all the lies the Party spews. For example:
Inthe early 1930's, an ex-carpenter was busy taking over Germany. His success in winning was due, in large part, to his
sending out hooligans to shout down and the disrupt meetings

of the other parties. History has recorded this name as Adolph Hitler and the hooligans as the Brown-Shirts.

That is happening right now in our country. They and their operatives are shouting down meetings and claiming that
current healthcare plans proposal: 1. create death panels for Granny,a Lie, 2. will ration health care---a Lie, 3. will transfer money out of our bank accounts--a Lie, 4. allow the government access to our bank accounts--a Lie, 5. use government money for abortions--a Lie, 6. okay euthanasia in healthcare--a Lie, and 7. cause government to be between you and your doctor--a Lie.

We currently have Insurance Companies in between us and our doctors.
Since the hooligans also claim any changes would be Socialism,
our existing social Medicare and Social Security programs are apparently also at risk from these AMERICAN HOOLIGANS.

Has bi-partisanship spoiled

The chances for a good healthcare program?

GET THE FACTS BEHIND THE NEWS Was the strong insistence on bi-partisanship a bad mistake that doomed the Healthcare bills from achieving the democratic objectives of the legislation? For example, a program such as a go’vt healthcare plan to compete with the insurance co’s and to give an insurance option to those with very limited resources to buy insurance.

The strong insistence on bi-partisanship seems strange since the Republicans had shown no interest in bi-partisanship. The Republicans fought hard against any Democratic initiative such as the bailout bills, the nomination of Supreme Court Justice Sotomoyer, even the clunker auto program. Secondly the Republicans in the Senate Finance Committee appeared to use their discussions to stall Healthcare momentum and get provisions they did not like eliminated, Perhaps they hoped to use the promise of bi-partisanship to talk about the bill so long that the momentum for it would be exhausted. Certainly Senator Grassley’s comments have been very unencouraging.

Did the Republicans see the emphasis on bi-partisanship by Pres Obrama as a sign of weakness and a person unsure of himself, or lacking in conviction, whose need of bi-partisanship could be exploited to limit the bill or even to kill it?

Historically major changes in our gov’t have come with aggressive leadership over the strenuous objections of those against. a) Would Thomas Jefferson have written the Declaration of Independence if he sat down with the British for a bi-partisan discussion? Would Abraham Lincoln have written the Emancipation proclamation if he approached the Confederates to seek a bi-partisan solution? Would FDR have committed to Social Security if he sought out the Republicans for a bi-partisan program? Would Lyndon Johnson have pushed thru Congress a Medicare bill if he asked the Republicans for bi-partisan help?

Come on guys! Let’s get with it. Let’s pass the best democratic bill we can.

"Moveon bussed people into Sarasota, FL, last night for their candlelight vigil."
So, both sides are now in the bussing game. Big deal. Turnabout is fair play, is it not? What's all the fuss about MoveOn.org, anyway? It's just an informal club, really. Bunch of folks who happen to have leftward political leanings hanging out, drinking some cold ones, playing a little golf ... Sure, there are a few crackpots in the mix, but the same goes for any collection of human beings, anytime, anywhere. I know some die-hard Republicans who absolutely grimace when they see what some of their fellow righties are up to. Bringing an assault rifle to a Presidential speaking engagement? Come on! Does your parole officer know you're within 50 feet of children, you degenerate cretin? Posters of the President with a Hitler mustachio?
It's hard to imagine anything more classless than that. It certainly rivals for tackiness anything we lefties did during the Bush years. Not that I supported those idiotic buffoons who thought it was cute to compare Bush to Hitler. I hope my reasonable Republican counterparts are equally disgusted by some of the shameful tactics being employed by the fringe right in their noble struggles on behalf of Big Insurance.
