New Goal for Herzlich Fund Raiser: $9,400
Last week, Virginia Tech announced it would be holding a fundraiser in honor of Boston College linebacker Mark Herzlich, who has cancer.
On Wednesday, it announced that it had altered the scope of its goal. After surpassing the initial goal of $5,094, the new target it $9,400. More than $7,000 has already been raised.
"There has been such an overwhelming response from our fans and the community that we want to raise our goal to $9,400," Coach Frank Beamer said in a statement.
The money is being raised through the sale of $1 wristbands in Blacksburg. All funds donated will go to Uplifting Athletes, a national nonprofit organization that raises attention to rare diseases through outreach, research, education and advocacy.
A check will be presented to Herzlich on Oct. 10, when the Eagles play at Lane Stadium. Last spring, Herzlich learned he had Ewing's sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that typically affects young men.
