Wednesday links

In your work week, it's Wednesday. In your heart, it's Friday. No. 14 Virginia Tech (5-2, 3-1 ACC) hosts North Carolina (4-3, 0-3) on Thursday night at Lane Stadium. So forget that business about this being the midway point of the week.

While Hokies fans will certainly welcome the shift toward the weekend and the team needs to get the bad taste out of its mouth following its 28-23 loss at Georgia Tech on Oct. 17, there's not a whole lot to look forward to in this week's matchup. North Carolina has struggled this year. How bad? Well, it is only the fourth-best team in its own state. Ouch.

Speaking of looking at the Tar Heel State, the Fayetteville Observer handicaps the in-state teams' chances at making a bowl game. The newspaper puts Duke at 60 percent chance of making a bowl game. East Carolina, it says, has an 80 percent chance. It says that North Carolina's chances, however, are only 50-50. A win over the Hokies would certainly help the Tar Heels' cause.

But, hey, there's a bright side if you're a Tar Heels' fan. Not only was the men's basketball team picked to finish atop the ACC this winter, the North Carolina women's team was voted the conference's top team in the preseason poll.

And in the wonderful world of YouTube, I found this 10-minute compilation of Virginia Tech's highlights through the Georgia Tech game. Enjoy.
