New uniforms to be unveiled

Virginia Tech has played in a number of different uniforms this season. When the Hokies play at Maryland on Saturday, they will be wearing the latest incarnation.

On Monday afternoon on campus, Virginia Tech fans can see the uniforms at an unveiling with Coach Frank Beamer and former Hokies Bruce Smith and Antonio Freeman.

The uniforms are Nike's Pro Combat line, which will be officially introduced next season. Virginia Tech is one of 10 teams to debut the new uniforms this month. In a statement, Nike said the Pro Combat line is the lightest football uniform it has ever created and that even when wet, would be lighter than the current Virginia Tech design.

Nike has put personal touches on Virginia Tech's uniform (and presumably on those of the other programs involved in this promotion).

The Virginia Core of Cadets is honored with the university motto, “Ut Prosim,” meaning “That I may serve” on the back of the pant, on the cuff of the Nike Vapor Trail 2.0 gloves and printed on the sock liner of the Nike Zoom Vapor Fly cleat.

The gradient fade pattern on the helmet, numbers and pants, the statement said, "represent the legendary speed of Hokies football." And "Beamer Ball" is inside the collar of each jersey.
