Virginia Tech takes on Quinnipiac in NIT

Happy St. Patrick's Day. Enjoy responsibly. Okay, let's get straight away to some reading to start your Wednesday.

Virginia Tech hosts Quinnipiac in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament. It's not what Hokies' fans wanted. In fact, some here might not have heard of the school. Here are the basics: it's private, has almost 8,000 students and is located in Connecticut. And its sports teams are known as the Bobcats.

If the Hokies win, they will face Connecticut in the second round of the tournament. The Huskies, who have really faded down the stretch, rallied past Northeastern on Tuesday night in their opening round NIT game.

Meanwhile, Maryland Coach Gary Williams vouched for the Hokies' NCAA tournament credentials in a radio interview on Tuesday. He said that the Hokies were "obviously good enough to be in the NCAA tournament."

While fans will probably appreciate the vote of confidence, it will mean little when Virginia Tech tips off the NIT on Wednesday at Cassell Coliseum.
