Veterans Day Event Offered At Civil War Fort

Fort Ward Museum & Historic Site in Alexandria, Va., will commemorate Veterans Day on Saturday, Nov. 8, with two free walking tours. A guide, dressed as a Union solider, will show visitors around the fortification built to protect Washington D.C.

The one-hour tours, beginning at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., are an introduction to the role of Fort Ward, its 19th century fortification engineering and the troops who were stationed there during the war.

Fort Ward is the best preserved of the 68 major Union forts that surrounded the District. Nearly 90% of the original earthworks remain and the Northwest Bastion has been restored to its war-time appearance.

Fort Ward is great site, unknown to most, even in the midst of ridgetop homes. Linda Wheeler a great guide to history we should know about.
