Grants announced for national battlefields
Seven of the nation’s Civil War battlefields will receive a portion of more than $1.2 million in annual National Park Service grants through the American Battlefield Protection Program, according to the Park Service. They include the battlefields at Monteith Swamp, Ga., Prairie Grove, Ill., Richmond and Tebbs Bend, Ky., Red River, La., Chattanooga, Tn., and Aquia Landing, Va
In South Carolina, grant money is available to document multiple battle and skirmish sites along Gen. William Sherman’s march across the state. In addition, the Tennessee State Library and Archives will receive $40,000 to create a data base of the states 38 war sites and the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation, Va., is slated to receive $61,000 for a new website.
