New stone for former slave and Union soldier
For close to 90 years, Union Army Private Samuel Brown's cemetery stone in a Vallejo, Calif., cemetery identified him as a Confederate. No one now knows how that happened because he actually served in Company K of the 137th U.S. Colored Troops.
Brown was given a new stone and a proper ceremony on July 24 according to a story by San Francisco Chronicle staff writer Marisa Lagos
