McKinley Graduates First Class

By Karen Vanegas

McKinley's first graduating class since 1997 walked across the stage on June 9th 2007. The school closed in 1997 and reopened in 2004 after $75 million worth of renovations. There were 134 students who graduated, only ten less from the first group that entered as sophomores in 2004.

McKinley graduates have completed more high school credits than any other school in DCPS. In order the graduate, students must complete four years of science, four years of math, three years of foreign language, and three years of social studies. They must also complete career technology education (CTE) in Biotechnology, Broadcast, or Information Technology. Over 95% of graduating seniors were accepted to colleges. After their training in Cisco technology, some students went directly into the work force.

Mayor Adrian Fenty and former Superintendent Clifford Janey both addressed the graduates. Mr. Frederick Cooke, Jr. was the keynote speaker. He is an attorney and McKinley Tech alumnus from the class of 1965.

The Valedictorian was Ciara Belle, who delivered an inspiring speech about overcoming obstacles and achieving goals. She spoke of having to overcome being diagnosed deaf and learning disabled as a child. The Salutatorian was Yasmine Saibou.

Ms Speight, assistant principal in charge of seniors, reflected on her years with this graduating class. "I was able to experience the growth and maturity with these students over three years. I admire their hard work, dedication and commitment."

McKinley and the class of 07 has so much to be proud of: graduating 93% of the sophomore class, securing promising college/workforce entrances, celebrating what I heard was a spectacular prom, significantly expanding the honor society, this blog!!!, not to mention all the awards (debate team, young playwrights, etc.). So, a BIG congrats to you all. Thanks for making these successes public. It's nice to FINALLY hear the amazing things DCPS students are accomplishing.
