McKinley students are being energized: mind, body and soul in the new Fitness Club. Platinum Body Workout is the first Fitness Club ever being offered at McKinley. The club is currently being led by Ms. Shavon Walker, a teacher and certified personal trainer.

There are currently fourteen girls and one boy in the club. All of the students are enthusiastic about their progress.

"It helps me to control my anger and focus more on schoolwork, especially since I've started choosing the right foods and staying healthy," said senior Jessica Parker.

Ms. Walker is dedicated to helping students live healthy lifestyles to prevent disease, stress, and fatigue. She developed the club because most adolescents practice unhealthy habits. To name a few, students lack the appropriate amount of sleep and make unhealthy food choices. In addition, modern conveniences have caused adolescents to become sedentary.

"Ms. Walker makes exercising fun, but she pushes us to take that step to the next level," said senior M'Heeraw Kennedy.

Participants in the club are separated into two groups, based on their Body Mass Index (BMI). One group focuses on weight loss and the other on muscle tone training. The weight loss group works on cardio/aerobic exercises to burn more calories and shed more pounds, while the muscle tone group is more focused on calisthenics.

"I have seen improvement in my thigh region and gained three pounds in muscle," said twelfth grader Veronica Jones. "I have always been an exceptional student, so the Fitness Club has just given me the energy and motivation to do other things."

"I have more juice and I can get around better," said junior Kelechi Osuji.
