Hezekiah Williams III, a freshman, received a Bronze Medal for third place in the Senior Engineering Division at the International Sustainability World Energy, Engineering, and Environmental Project (I-SWEEEP) Olympiad 2008. It was held in Houston, Texas in May 2008. There were students from 61 countries and forty states that included over 500 Science Fair Projects. This was the first annual I-SWEEEP Olympiad.
Williams was chosen to attend the Olympiad after winning second place in this year's citywide science fair. His project compared gasoline and diesel as fuel, focusing on differences in the time it takes each to boil, the amount needed, and the environmental impact of their use. The idea of his project came from his love of cars.
"I really like cars," he said. "I like finding solutions to things in cars, just to help the environment and to help the performance of vehicles. I just can't wait until I get a car."
When he found out that he'd won second place in the citywide science fair and would move on to Houston it brought him much excitement.
"I felt really excited even though I didn't really show it," he said. "I've been to citywide once before, but to actually win second place and be able to move on to Houston was exciting. There's no other word to explain it."
Williams has already made plans, as far as school and career goals.
"I'm definitely going to continue with school," he said. "I'd like to go to a college with a good mechanical engineering program, such as MIT or North Carolina A&T. More than likely, I'll pursue a career in that field."
Williams also received two other awards, The American Society of Mechanical Engineers Award and the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research Award. In addition, he was awarded a two week internship with Walter Reed Army Institute of Research for this summer.
