McKinley's Outdoor track team trained extremely hard the last couple months to prepare for the Penn Relays. This year they accomplished something they have been aiming to do for a while. The boys 4x400 team placed third in their heat. While this may not seem like a big accomplishment to some, they placed well among schools from around the country that have had a track program for decades.
"I trained really hard for this," said Simeon Young, 12th grade. "I couldn't wait to be around really good student athletes and not just the mediocre ones we're usually around."
McKinley made their second appearance there since the school reopened in 2004. Just like last year, the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) provided six track teams in the city with an all-expense paid trip to the national event. Bus fare, hotel accommodations, and food were covered. The other teams that went are Wilson SHS, Dunbar SHS, Spingarn SHS, Anacostia SHS, and School Without Walls SHS.
To prepare for the traditional track meet, the teams spent more time in the weight room. They also went to track meets every week in the Washington, D.C. area, to compete against other kinds of athletes.
The boys' team also placed first in the East Division at the East/West Championships held at Anacostia SHS.
