Inaugural Housing: A Cautionary Tale
With thousands of people renting out their houses for inauguration week, think that there won't be any problems? Ask Margaret Knox Baum (at right, with daughter Rosa and husband Dan). Baum, of Boulder, Colo., thought she was ahead of the game by agreeing last June to rent a townhouse on Capitol Hil for five nights in January. Alas, her contract was abruptly canceled by the landlord with little explanation after Barack Obama won the general election Nov. 4. Was the landlord looking to make more money?
