Inaugural Ball Watch: D.C.'s 51st State Inaugural Ball

The D.C. government is throwing its own inaugural ball and the ultra, super-fancy, ritzy location is ... city hall!

Lest anyone suggest D.C. pols aren't of the people, council member Harry Thomas Jr. tells Inauguration Watch that the city's party on Jan. 20 will be in the people's building-- the John A. WIlson Building at 1350 Pennsylvania Ave. NW

Veteran District watchers are well-versed in the city's push for Congressional voting rights. A bill to give the predominantly Democratic city a House seat--along with an extra seat for predominantly Republican Utah for political balance--was approved by the House last year but blocked by the Senate. City officials are poised to try again early next year.

In the meantime, the District's 51st State Inaugural Ball will call attention to the city's lack of representation. Details are still being worked out, but the party will start at 8 p.m. on Jan. 20 and symbolic tickets will cost $51 -- low in comparison to most other balls whose tickets are ranging from $200 to $400.

D.C.'s go-go impressario Chuck Brown has been asked to perform, and other local bands also will be courted, officials said.

But will anyone in Congress listen to the city's sad song?
