Spider-Man Comic Book Creating All the Buzz
It's Inauguration Day, and mass bridge closures on the D.C.-Virginia border have not stopped the likes of the Chameleon from infiltrating the president-elect's swearing-in ceremony. In fact, the villainous shape shifter has not only braved the colossal crowds to get into the District, but he has changed his form to become mirror image of Barack Obama.
That's the story scheduled to hit shelves Wednesday, when Marvel Comics releases Amazing Spider-Man #583, a comic book with a five-page inaugural insert that has America's angst-filled superhero briefly playing Secret Service for Barack Obama.
The book is already generating intense local hype, with some comic shops seeing an influx of first-time customers.
“Nobody expected this book to do what it's doing,” said James Rambo, assistant manager Big Monkey Comics on 14th Street NW. “It's gotten to the point where I'm just not taking reserve orders anymore.”
The book retails for $2.99, Rambo said. Some copies will have a special cover featuring the president-elect, according to Marvel. The comic book company said the special insert was inspired because Obama has said publicly that he is a Spider-Man fan.
